I am looking at buying a new system I understand that Win XP does not run even recent games like Mech Warrior II. I mainly will run games 75% and run internet 25% should I purchase, Win XP, Win XP & Win 98Se, buy Win XP and install my Win 95 last version in dual boot, Buy Win 98SE and install win XP when they have an upgrade version. I see that Tom uses Win 98 SE for game speed. I also want to know if the performance of Win XP using Win 98SE preferences works as fast as win 98SE? Are there problems having dual boots for Win XP?

 
Since you are talking about a brand new system, I would go with Windows XP.

Win 98 SE still seems to be the overall fastest OS for gaming though..but that might change in a near future in favor of XP.

No, shouldn't be if you prepare and configure your system properly. I would install each operating system on a separate drive or disk partition.

A dual boot of XP and 98SE would be a good choice.
When the problems regarding XP and games are solved you can switch to 100% XP.
 
If you've got the cash, sure get XP and Win98 - best of both worlds.

Personally I would say just get XP, soon enough all compatilities will be resolved (well, you'd think anyway). It would be crazy for software/hardware developers not to release XP updates for their products.
 
The problem has been and forever will be, not with current products but rather, with older products that has been discontinued or support is no longer provided for. With current stuff, I find that the only major problem is my ATI TV-Wonder. While the capture feature does work, it is significantly slower and looses a lot more frames than in WinME/Win98. Software that is old, such as Final Fantasy 7 and 8, and Birth of the Federation (just to name a few) will probably never be made compatible with WinXP, as those products are no longer supported by the companies who made them. I suppose progress does take sacrifices.
