What Op Sys is best for this computer ?

I have a notebook that I want to get up and running. Would either Win 2000 pro or XP Pro be more suited.

It is as follows:
P3 650meghtz
7gig HDD
256 ram
CD drive
TFT screen

Also what format for this 7gig drive should I use fat32 or NTFS.

Either would work fine, with XP being a little better on the driver support.

Yeah...either one will be fine on that setup. XP will look a little nicer, possibly, and will be more painless on supporting hardware, as previously posted. I'd recommend turning off the XP bells and whistles to save RAM and increase performance if you're going to have a few different things running at once.

NTFS is a more fault-tolerant, reliable format, as far as i know. Unless you need to share data with a Windows 98 machine, NTFS is probably your best bet.

XP might chug a bit even after turning off unnecessary services and crap. I had an old laptop w/ P3 850Mhz, 128 Ram, 30 Gig HDD and XP was pretty slow, even though I turned off all the XP looks, useless services, etc. I would suggest Win2K as your best bet.

Thanks for the advice so far.

The notebook had XP on a FAT32 drive and it did run OK except for a modem connection problem that could not be resolved, so I have reformatted the drive and just tried a fresh install of XP, but the modem problem continues. Basically the connection to the ISP is made but after some time 1min to 30min it will look connected but no traffic will be incoming, very frustrating when you are trying to upgrade XP with the updates. It is a Cnet PCMCIA modem CFM260, the Card controller is a Texas, and the notebook is a 3100c clone, tried all sorts of new drivers, etc. Very frustrating, especially after deleting an otherwise fine system.

I have a very similar laptop, 600MHz/192MB RAM Sony about 4 years old, that I had Windows XP installed on and it ran fine. A little slow, but nothing unexpected with a system like that.

Like they said. I have a P3 700 Mhz 256MB laptop but with a 20GB drive. A faster hard drive will make a HUGE difference in speed on that machine. Especially once you start paging out to the disk.
