We are getting near our 1st oil change in the RDX normally we get what ever is cheapest, but every one keeps telling me to use higher quality
So what filter and oil should I get?

I dont want to spend a fortune on this, I normally pick up 5 quarts of oil and a filter for around $15

Also the car is lightly driven as my mom panics if she sees the RPM go above 3000... Doesn't do justice for the turbo, when my dad or I drive it (Once a month... :frown: ) we do drive it like any normal person. JSK when my mom drives the car her average MPG is 27 when my dad or I drive its 20 - 22

thanks!

How long are they going to keep it? Unless you say "forever", just get what ever oil is on sale. Most important thing is to change it on a regular interval - as defined by your owners manual (or more often if you want to hedge your bet).

Honda/Acura recommends Mobil 1 for the RDX. Mobil 1 is also the factory fill for the RDX. Mobil 1 is easy to get and reasonably priced. I use it in my SRT-4, which is also turbo and also recommends mobil 1.

Honda probably recommends Mobil 1 because it is a synthetic oil and can withstand the heat produced by the turbo, and hopefully prelong the life of the turbo bearings. Since the factory recommends a synthetic oil, I would at least use a synthetic oil if you don't use Mobil 1.

As far as filters, you can probably check out the various filter reviews and pick one that is a good cost/performance blend for you. Commonly recommended (non comprehensive list) brands that are considered "good" are: Wix, Napa gold (and silver?), purolator, Bosch and Mobil 1. Many of these are really the same, so price alone doesn't mean anything.

Here's an example of pricing on one of the filters. http://www.amazon.com/Purolato...&qid=1208739428&sr=8-1

All autoparts stores sell it, but Walmart usually carries it in 5 quart jugs for a bit less. I think it's 20 to 21$ for the 5 quarts.

I'd give 1 more vote for Mobil 1, or at least other Synthetic. RDX's Turbocharged i-VTEC is fairly sophicated engine, whch needs right treatment. Especially since your family will keep the car close to forever, I'd say absolutely for synthetic.

Mobil 1 at walmart, $20 for 5 quart jug.

I dont care for honda oil filters, re badged fram cheapos, go with a better oil filter while your at it. Don't get me wrong, it should do 3k fine but I think recommended intervals on that are 5 or 7k.

Okay, I stand corrected. Didn't realize the car was turbocharged. Synthetic oil is superior in terms of high temp film strength and the ability to not break down. Good stuff.

FYI, Mobil 1 oil in California is a fair bit more expensive than you other guys note. They hit us up for a recycle fee plus they just plain gouge here. Paid $17 for a gallon of Rotella synthetic the other day from Walmart that's going in my motorcycles - M1 is a goodly bit more money.

Yes, the service internal for the Honda-brand oil filter in my Accord is every 15,000 miles. Obviously I change it with every oil change and do both more frequently than "required."

If you just want to use the Honda or Acura-branded filters, you can buy a bunch of them at the dealer's parts department. At least for the Honda ones, they were only a few cents more than the Bosch filters at Kragen. They also sell crush washers very inexpensively.

I would definitely use a synthetic for turbo, M1 is fine and so are Castrol Pennzoil Valvoline, or even better Redline Amsoil or Royal Purple.

Regular 5w30 may be fine but I wouldn't want deposit forming around the hot spot in the long run.

So, do you really want to leave up to a quart of filthy oil in your vehicle with an oil change? Sort of defeats the purpose, doesn't it? And, what if the filter is getting clogged already....changing the filter every other oil change is just dumb, IMHO. Why not spend the extra few dollars and be done with it......and have a complete oil change.

Use the cheapest Syn oil you can find that meets current specs. Mobil1 is not as good as it used to be. If its on sale i use it if not then I move on.

For filters just use the cheapest that is not a fram. I get my filters for my cars, and familys, from Rockauto.com under the brand name proTec. They are really good and also very cheap. But also Wix, purolator, stp, bosch, etc... are good as well.
