How did you know it was in flames? Did you smell it? See the flames out the window? Get woken up by neighbor?

I smelled it thru my bedroom window, and after i peered down at it from the balconey I could see flames standing a few feet tall.

No, when I put the ashes in the pot i thought they were out. They smoldered for 3 days before stoking up to a real fire.

Yeah, that's why you always poor water on ashes. Not trying to bust your balls though. At least now you know for the future.

From the other side of the fence.

So not only did you try burning your house down to warm up the planet, you had to go and put a radiator heater outside to also cause more global warming? How's it working heating the outdoors?

Ha! Yeah, I wondered if anyone would say something about that. I brought out the space heater to block the gap between the fence and the house because I'm dog-sitting for my sister today. Thats what the flower pots were doing before I melted them down on accident.

I dont think it was stupid... it was an accident, shit happens.

Its only stupid if you do it again, and not learn from the mistake

 for having the courage to tell us about it.

As we see, any unattended fire of any size is extremely dangerous, mostly due to the stealth / unpredictablility / daring escape / didn't expect that factor. Ironically, the seemingly harmless ashes were much more dangerous than a real fire would have been.

A fire you're done with and will no longer be attending should be treated like a black mamba. If it's not super-ultra-mega dead as disco, it's still deadly. Usually not even to the person who lit the fire, but to others who had nothing to do with it.

 for the :camera:'s

a few months ago my daughter had a bon fire party in the back yard
just before going to bed, i went out to check the fire, looked like it was completely out, so i put a log in the middle of the fire pit for next time
next morning, the log was burning away, sometime during the night it got hot enough from coals under the ashes (presumably) to start back up

gotta put out fire the way smoky bear and boy scouts do it
Summary: Put out a campfire completely and make sure that the coals on the bottom have cooled. Learn how to put out a campfire from an Eagle Scout in this free camping video.

Ahh, boy scouts. It brings back memories on my first campout where the older scouts almost started a forest fire in the SoCal wilderness (the type you always see burning on the news).

The dads were hanging out a hundred yards away and some scouts thought it would be a great idea to start a fire in the fire pit residing right underneath a partially dead oak tree. The flames got to about 8 feet (maybe another four feet to the tree branches) before a dad saw it and came running over. The boys who started it lost their fire starting card or whatever.

<--- burned down about 50% of a house doing almost exactly what the OP did. Granted, I was 5 years old, but it made the local papers!

Phew, close call. Good thing you were still up. Lesson learned I suppose, and now you know hot to make a fire bundle and transport it around!

Did you not realize smoldering is bad...
