In modern vehicles, the glass is an integral portion of the vehicles structure. It is quite strong.

The hill coming down from the bridge is very steep. The picture doesn't really give an accurate idea of how steep it really is. It's quite a ride down the hill :) A few years back, they redid the back stretch and added a kink to slow cars down coming up to the bridge and to lessen the angle of the corner but it doesn't seem to have helped this guy out.

The first time I went under that bridge, I thought I'd gone over the edge of the world. I haven't ridden on the new track, but Road Atlanta rocked back then. Morning practice was always fun - it takes a while for the track to warm up around that bridge (since it's in the shade), and somebody (not me, of course - I would never do something that dumb ) always loses it around there.

Getting that red Georgia clay out of your leathers is impossible.

EDIT: Movie Trivia - If you've ever seen Freejack, that bridge is the one that Emilio Estevez lofted his car into.

Adding the kink saves someone from stuffing themselves into the outside concrete support of the bridge but they are probably carrying alot more speed under the bridge now which would tend to make it alot more likely that you get light in the ass and lose grip as you make the transition down the hill. But nothing could be as bad as coming up to that bridge without the kink and praying your brakes hold out one more time. My first time there I saw a guy total a perfect AC Cobra...right into the outside concrete bridge support...was '78 or '79 I think.

Stuff happens. Just because you know how to drive doesn't mean you're perfect.

Well first it would be Panoz and that would make the car the AIV Roadster. I looked at getting one until I saw that I couldn't afford it. Nice car though.

Isn't that, "because you can afford an expensive car, doesn't mean you know how to drive it!"

Having money does not make one a good driver.

Second time I've done that :| I wrecked my f40 the first time but figured I'd learned the trick to that corner. I still have an enzo in the garage I'll probably try it again tomorrow with that.

Hehe.....yeah the old Road A was, er, interesting. Between bouncing your chest off the tank through the Gravity Cavity and then barrelling over that blind rise at full-tilt-boogie it was never a dull moment. New layout is safer and makes for good racing anyway since people end up going in the chicane 4-wide at times. :D

The original post implied that the driver didn't know how to drive. I replied, saying that even good drivers aren't perfect...who's he to say the driver didn't know how to drive? Accidents happen...even to the best.

Sucks to be him.

Then again if you can afford to toss around a $200K car you probably don't mind TOO much if you hose it.

one could always buy a sh!tty Pontiac Fiero and a Lamborghini body kit for it, availiable in most kit car mags, and toss that around. Sure it won't be that fast, but you'll look cool. You'll pull of an 18 second 1/4 mile and people will wonder...
