Looking for my next upgrade and not sure where I want to go, so asking everyone here. Comp is used for school and some gaming like EQ, FFXI, CoH and hopefully EQ2 when it is released. Wouldn't want to spend more then $100 if possible...

System Specs:

AMD Athlon XP 1800+ @ 1.53GHz
Biostar M7VIT Pro
3x 256 PC2700 for 768MB Total
ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 128MB
Sound Blaster Live 5.1
16X DVD Drive
HP Pavilion MX50 Monitor

Right now I'm between 3 things the video card, cpu and monitor. How important is a monitor to you guys? Here's a link to it http://www.epinions.com/S0537292-HP_Pavilion_MX50/display_~full_specs the reason why people like it I'm thinking is because it has a built in mic on it. But I know for EQ the max resolution blows with any custom UI's (those EQ players know what I mean). It's more of an annoyance then anything else mind you. So, what's everyone's opinions?

No, $100 to work with so asking which would be best to go with given my fiances and what I would like to use the computer for...poor college kid here $100 is half of a paycheck for me.

no CD burner to backup your stuffz..?

Was actually thinking of going with a DVDRW, but was told that something (forget what was said) is coming out that will drop the price of DVD burners so to hold off on that for a bit.

How long ago were you told this?

Couple weeks ago? Something about the next generation burners are just starting to come out onto the market so the price of the older ones will be dropping.

AFAIK DVD Rewritable drives have dropped in price.

Remembered some retail ad not too long ago that had a DVD Rewritable (dual format) @ around $50 after rebate.

Yeah, but looking for over all between monitor, vid or cpu. Granted, I'm going to get a DVDRW, that was never in question 😀

And I HATE ebay now. Use to buy everything from there until I found these kind of forums. Have lost over $500 on ebay now....most of it from trying to buy a nice system that some guy took my money and ran and ebay/paypal can and will do nothing....so no ebay....

Anything you get for $100 won't be much an upgrade because nothing for that much will be significantly faster if you dont find a cheap price.

To tell you the truth, I probably wouldnt upgrade anything, unless you listen to music a lot and dont have a 5.1 sound system yet, then something like Logitech 640 could be a decent upgrade.

Since your cpu and your videocard are both slow, putting money into 1 or the other is rather worthless as it wont give you much return on your investment unless the other one is also replaced. But considering a videocard gives you more return on your investment for gaming, I would upgrade it first.

Well if you insist on buying online/retail and not on e-bay, maybe:

9700 $150 - I know this is 50 over your limit but its a decent upgrade.

If you don't want to spend a lot you can get 9600Pro for $125 or Geforce 4200 for $85-90; but I figured the 9700 card is worth the extra $$. Read the review for it Here

If you just want a faster desktop environment you could always get a faster cpu, like a Barton 2500, Thoroughbred 2700+, or even a Mobile XP 2500+ for <$100.

Well, it's just that I've been ripped off from ebay before with computer parts, and have gotten DOA items that they won't return. And I've also been told that you should never buy comp parts from ebay. What should I be looking for when buying comp parts from ebay then? I mean besides good feedback.
