i'm using Forte Agent, and it sucks. i tag what i want to download. but when my isp cuts me off (Earthlink), all the tasks i had queued in Forte Agent disappears. I have to go through all my subscribed groups and re-tag.

What reader do u use?

i use agent. i have tried outlook (what a joke, piece of sh*t), netscrape, gravity. nothing beats agent as far as i am concerned. it was the first reader i used back in 1995 or so. i guess i just got used to it. i like the interface more than anything else.

i don't know what you problem you're having specifically, but it's probably something you can work around.

try going to the alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent newsgroup and asking for help. the people in there will know.

Agent here.. I like it so much better than IE or Netscape, though I like Netscape's search engine. Haven't tried the others mentioned here.. For those of you that have tried Agent and are using something else besides IE and Netscape, give me a reason to switch.

I'm too lazy to find the links for you, but you need a couple of small freeware utilities to make your life easier. Keep using Agent as it's the best newsreader available, as opposed to dedicated binary file downloaders which are a completely different animal. To take care of the problem of getting cut off and Agent hanging, here's what you do.

1) Look for a program called "D.U.N.C.E" (Dial-Up Networking Connection Enhancement) which will automatically redial your ISP if you get cut off when away from the computer.

2) Grab "Task Monitor for Agent" and have that running while downloading while AFK. That will automatically check Agent for error messages, close them and resume scheduled tasks.

So, what happens is: Get cut off by ISP, Agent hangs, generates error message. DUNCE kicks in, re-connects to ISP, Task Monitor kicks in, closes the error dialog box and resumes the downloads. Was a lifesaver back in the days before broadband and I still use Task Monitor when downloading AFK in case there's a Newsserver timeout or other problem with Agent. Just do a search for the 2 programs needed, they should be pretty easy to find.

In my opinion, Forte Agent is by far the best newsreader. XFILE: you should mark your messages by hitting the "M" key which means "mark for retrieval" or "W" which means download the complete thread. Next, when you are connected, click on the "get marked messages" icon. Now if you are disconnected, simply reclick on that same "get marked messages" icon.

I love Agent. I downloaded a lot of Adult Educational Material with it. I also use it to read the newsgroups.

I've been using WinVN daily for 8 years now, and I haven't found a better reader yet. It breaks every rule in the Microsoft interface book, which is why it works so well.

I'd reccommend using the Mark Spankus builds. You can get it from his website.

It's free and open source.

I haven't used usenet in a while, but I used to use Netscape Messenger/Collabra for reading and writing to text groups and the full version of Forte Agent for binaries.

I've never liked Outlook/Outlook Express, and now with so many email script viruses exploiting Outlook, I refuse to use it at all on my personal machine.
