Updated OP with ADATA XPG SX950.

Wowza, that's a pricey drive.

I understand it's 3D MLC and all, but it's significantly more expensive than the 850 EVO, PNY CS2211 (MLC), and a little bit more than the 850 PRO (MLC).

On top of that, the drive capacity is less. For example, the ADATA is 400 GB for $250, while the 850 PRO is 512 GB for $230. Heck, it's the same price of the 500 GB 960 EVO.

Just my opinion, but I don't think ADATA is going to sell a lot of those this late in the SATA SSD game.

On that ADATA SU900, the company is pricing the 256GB model in between the 256GB and 512GB SU800 model (which uses Micron 3D TLC NAND rather than Micron 3D MLC NAND):

SU800 256GB: $79.99
SU800 512GB: $139.99

SU900 256GB: $117.99

(Both SU800 and SU900 use the SM2258 controller)

.....so it looks like there is only very slight premium pricing on this 3D MLC SSD...... at least on paper. (re: the 256GB 3D MLC Model appears to be priced only slightly higher than what a 384GB 3D TLC model would cost (est. $109.99 for 384GB TLC SSD).

SU800 256GB is currently $54.99 AR FS, so lets hope the SU900 256GB street price is a decent amount lower as well.

SU900 256GB is now $89.99 free shipping at Newegg

(So it did turn out that the sale price street pricing is lower on the SU900 just as it was with the SU800)

I really want an m.2 drive but the prices keep fluctuating upward.

I don't know if it's the best deal out there, but the NVMe BPX is still close to the price where I bought it. It was $199 in Nov 2016, now it's $209. Only place to get it is Amazon though.

Hottest mine runs is 62c so it isn't a throttle-happy fireball either.

MLC according to the Amazon/Crucial listing:

"Protect your photos, videos, and irreplaceable files from catastrophic hard drive crashes by storing them on inherently more durable Micron 3D MLC NAND."

Well, maybe the 850 EVO dropped in price due to this new drive? The 500 GB 850 EVO has held in the $170 - $180 range for most of the year, and over the last several days dropped to $139 at Amazon and other retailers, and was available for $129 for a few days at Newegg. Heck, if you are lucky enough to live close to a Fry's, it's $109.

And since they are still saying there is a NAND shortage, I don't know of any other reason for the price drop. Outside of that, the BX300 looks like a smart buy as long as it is cheaper than the 850 EVO. When the price is the same, I personally would likely just go with the Samsung.
