Edit: The current 15" Powerbook is as close as it's gotten so far. It only has three drawbacks other then price

1) Not x86. Bad, bad thing.
2) Suckage video (Can you blame it? It's a mac)
3) Can't use standard IDE harddrive. This feature is CRUCIAL. I know it means giving up a LOT in terms of slimness, but don't ship the laptop with a 3.5" drive in it, let those of us that need it add it and deal with the weight and power consumption issues ourselves. External enclosures DON'T CUT IT.

Uh well it would appear that the powerbook is nowhere near as close as it's gotten? lol what a silly post.

Was EyeMWing being sarcastic. My sarcasm meter seems to have broken....

Would also alleviate a lot of the risk when you drop the laptop and damage the display you could (in theory) buy a new one for less than the cost of a new laptop.

I guess the drawback would be size/weight, but, a decent interface would be useful.

You do know they have systems with a second wireless monitor that is a touch screen, right?

okay seriously, if you're designing one (from a design perspective ignoring the technical details) then make on that has a keyboard that slides out from the LCD. Kinda like a tablet pc but it doesn't fold, the keyboard slides out and it hinges.

In fact make it fold in quarters so if you're not using your laptop you can fold it into 1/4 it's size and use it as a small pda.

not really: http://www.wacom-components.com/english/tech.asp
This energy couples with a tank circuit which is located in the pen. The pen is battery-less. It is the simplest type of EMR pen, and contains just an inductor & capacitor in its simplest embodiment. The inductance and capacitance values of the tank circuit are selected to match the resonant frequency of the antenna coil.

Detachable display for tablet use and use on a stand for better keyboard positioning on the desktop (yes I know that's almost how wildly overpriced tablet PCs work now, but they put all the "guts" in the display instead of in the keyboard. Perhaps the display should have the motherboard, but keep the HD and optical in the keyboard linked by wireless USB.)

Liquid cooling and radiators to remove some or hopefully all internal fans

Pop-out (or snap-on?) numeric keypad (and movement/paging keys too?) to create a normal keyboard.

Snap-off wireless optical mouse?

Virtual-Reality.

The laptop is actually just sunglasses that interfaces with your synaptic nerves (kinda like Geordi), allowing you to do things at ultra-fast speeds. (Imagine just thinking and it'd write up a 11-page report in 30 mins based on what you know and think. And it should use bioenergy from your body and should still allow you to see past the laptop for when you're walking on a street. It should have a built-in wap so that each sunglass gives every other sunglass and itself wireless internet whenever one's in the area. It must be sturdy, comfortable, include headphones with the option of noise-cancelling. The screen can also be any size and the visual should be 3d.

Patent pending :)

You realize how strong the B field has to be to wipe a harddrive? BIG this actually isn't unreasonable, not over such great distances, but still...

Oh, and my revolution...

The drawback would be that easily replacable screens don't fit into 'planned obsolesence'.

I have a feeling we might never see this, or upgradable video cards, or anything else of the sort. Why would laptop makers kill off one of their major sources of profits?
