What music for a 6hr (one way) road trip?

I'm bored of the CDs I currently have in my car, and I'm going to be doing a little road trip tomorrow. It's going to be 6 hours one way, and another 6 hours on the way back. I need a decent amount of music for this. So what do you suggest? I'm open to anything, but generally what do you like to listen to in such conditions? I've got rap/hip hop stuff, I have some electronic music from digitallyimported.com, I have tons of heavy rock and alternative rock type stuff. Tons of metallica and similar styles.

What specific styles or bands would you recommend, personally? Any favorites of yours you'd like to share? Most likely I'm not looking for thrashing hardcore crap, I tend to just play the really rackety stuff when I'm in a bad mood or just pumped up, but I doubt I'll be feeling that way on a 6 hour road trip.

Thanks in advance!

Make the trip 3 times and listen to Wagner's complete Ring Cycle. Actually, since it's 6 hours each way you can get 2/3 through it all on one round trip.

311 - Reggae/Rock/Other twist... one of my all time favorite bands. Soundsystem and From Chaos are my two favorite albums... I love every song on each of them. Their new album (Evolver) is also excellent.

Modest Mouse - Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About

Great album, good driving music, and fitting for your purpose. 🙂

Audio books are great. My favorite is a collection of Ray Bradbury stories being read by Ray himself.

I'll second that. I do like audio books...

Another alternative is standup comedy. Man, nothing passes the time faster on a boring road trip than standup!

I agree, I find audio books or a recording of a stand-up comedian keeps me awake MUCH better than music.

Simple. On repeat:

Highway to Hell.

If you're looking for somthing less monotonous, add Metallica - Turn the Page (Its a cover - a better version of the cover), Metallica - Astronomy (Another cover), and Metallica - Fuel.

Oakenfold - Transport, Live in China

Holts - The Planets

Top tracks on XM radio 46

fusk just buy XM its all i listen to now. soooooo great for long trips

i have the origional broadcast of War of The Worlds on MP3 and LOTR Fellowship. the BBC one

Audiobooks. I drive alot for my job at the state, and audiobooks are like having someone go with you.

Hit the library, they will check them out to you.

Start of trip - Something hard, to get you on your way quickly
Middle of trip - Cruising music, something nice and relaxing
End of trip - Softer stuff (i'm thinking coldplay). It'll keep you from flipping out after driving amongst other retarded drivers for six hours.

Yeah, I don't know, unless it's music I've never heard before, I find myself just wanting to skip to the next song, and not listen all the way through. With standup, or audiobooks, it makes time fly...especially on long, boring trips, like across Ohio, or Indiana (no offense to Ohio or Indiana, but anyone who's driven on 80 has to admit it is lacking for scenery).

try not listening to anything. I used to take 7 hour trips alone in my car without a radio. Silence is golden and you'll figure out the meaning of life...

Rent a book or a movie on CD and listen to it. My wife and I just did a 9 hour drive yesterday. We rented Matchstick Men on CD and listened to it the whole ride.
