What MP3 Player would you get for $200 or so?

Have a neighbor who's looking. Either a memory based one or a harddisk one... the archos 20GB is $224 at buy.com. There are some solidstate ones for slightly less. He doesn't jog, mostly for use when traveling. He doesn't want a CDPlayer one because of the size.

Thus, based on above, I think archos is probably the way to go but thought I'd get some opinions here. Maybe there's a better deal I'm missing?

I'm off to read some reviews... thanks in advance.

Aren't the refurb 10gb IPOD's about $170?

I heard some rumors (I can't deny or confirm though) that the IPOD's battery is non changeable - that in 18-24 months, once the battery goes dead for good, your IPOD is just a paperweight then. (At least with the later revisions) Anyone know about that?

Shitty excuse. The media is damn-near free. (Wal-Mart in my area has 100 CD-R's for less than $30.) The interfacing is already present in most computers. (Most middle-class Americans have CD-burners, from what I've seen.)

When one ignores the very downfalls of CD mp3 players (such as shock sensitivity), one can see how a $55 mp3 player at freakin' Walgreens or some other stupid place is better than an $80 64-meg jobbie.

That's comforting to know. It's pretty lame to stick someone with a $200-$400 paperweight
