Best case scenario its 24 hours, thats listening to 64 kbps WMA, continuosly, without using backlight, without seeking, etc.
My iPod gets 14 hours under the same conditions, and anywhere from 10-12 under normal listening conditions, I charge it every other night, I can't imagine someone listening to an MP3 player for 24 hours straight.

EDIT: Also, before buying my iPod, I toyed with the idea of getting a Zen Touch, but I didn't think near double the thickness was worth the increase in battery life.

If you're going small, though it doesn't sound like you would, go Carbon.

That looks a LOT more appealing to me than an ipod, if they're available in this country I'll look for a shop to try one at.

If you're sure on buying a Rio, make sure you hold on IN HAND before you do. They're really.........fragile, or at least from what I've seen, might have just been a bad egg though

Go to CircuitCity.com, or CNET.com, or anywhere, and read a couple of the consumer reviews. See how many Rio players get returned for defects or early deaths.
Or I could go by my own impressions as an employee of Best Buy for 2 years and recently as an actual Rio Carbon owner.

People tend to only bother to write those reviews if the product is absolutely terrible in their experience, or perfect beyond all compare. I don't trust consumer reviews in the least.

yllus, you left a little thing out in your review, the iPod Mini 4 GB is 179.99 after edu discount, and you don't even need to be edu to get the discount, just put in a random school, also the 6 GB is 229, so that kinda puts the 5 GB carbon right in the middle

AFAIK just an updated version of the HD1 that doesn't castrate MP3/WMAs into ATRAC. If it wasn't tethered to crappy ass Sonic Stage, I would've bought it over my iPod

I don't understand that

Its predecessor converted all MP3s and WMAs into crappy ATRAC files, Sonic Stage is Sony's sorrye excuse for software.

The NW-HD1 used to convert MP3s into Sony's proprietary ATRAC format before copying them to the player. The NW-HD3 supports MP3s natively.

Sonic Stage is Sony's version of iTunes. It lets you manage your player files and download music from Sony's connect.com.

The NW-HD5 should be coming out in a month or two.

Oh right yeah, ATRAC's the same thing they use for their MDs.

If style is more important than price, then get a 60GB ipod (of an iRiver player) and that's it. If you care more about price, then perhaps a Dell DJ. Its got better sound quality, longer battery life, its cheaper, but not as stylish as the iPod (its a bit thicker, a bit wider, a bit shorter...looks squashed compared to the ipod).

Dell DJ = Creative player with different external look

a better external look. The screen is much larger, the controls are much better, unit is physically smaller and yes, even a bit more stylish than the Zen. I know because my friend has the Zen and I have the DJ.

no one has suggested the iAudio M3? its thinner than the ipod, awesome battery life, fm/voice recording, the works. the catch is that there's no screen on the unit itself, just on the little remote. when i get an mp3 player this is going to be it. www.iaudio.com

If I remember correctly, Sony is *finally* going to support MP3 playback with its newest line of MD players - not all, mind you, but some of them . . ..

Slow proprietary-dependnat bastards, I say.

It's a real shame as well, they must have lost a ton of MD followers (possibly) including myself soon.
