What MP3 player should I get?

I've been a huge fan of minidiscs ever since they existed and to this day I still use MDs, but it's a pain in the arse having to carry 10 discs for different music, even with the advancements in compression for MDs I have a LOT of music (like 60gb worth of 192kbps) and I'm thinking it's about time to get an mp3 player instead.

So anyway, questions.

Should I stick with MD or get an mp3 player?

Should I jump on the band wagon and buy an ipod?

If I should get an ipod which one?

If you hate the ipod tell me why and tell me what should I get instead.

Ta,

DnaJ, if you really don't mind price, get the 60 GB iPod Photo. Or if you don't want an iPod, get one of iRiver's HD based players, very nice. I'd avoid Creative's HDD MP3 players, I've seen three too many fail. Not to mention Creative's players are huge chunky monsters, but if you want the cheapest GB/$, get a Creative Zen Xtra 60 GB

Everyone I know has an ipod, the thing that puts me off it is the fact that the battery is built in, surely that means when the battery is fvcked so is the ipod, no?

Gee buddy, thanks for the informative reply.

It's a great MP3 Player. It has more features than the Ipod, and better sound quality. FM tuner, recorder. You can get it in the 4, 5, and 6gb.
But not many aftermarket toys to go with it.

For pure functionality I would go with the Dell DJ + redchair software. Excellent sound quality and the redchair software makes it so easy.

Meh, I've learnt to deal with that fact, its not an iPod problem, moreso a Li-Ion limitation. Anyways, when it dies, either I'll send it in to Apple or buy one of the aftermarket batteries for 30 bucks and try it myself.

IDIOT, he has 60 FVCKING GIGABYTES OF MUSIC, not 6. Its one thing when someone bashes the iPod using facts (Gurck does a really good job at this, he has all the facts ready) but when you just say things like "more features" it makes you look dumber

EDIT: Ah, now you see the bold 60's

Ta,
Do you want/need to store all 60gbs on the player at once?

I'd be interested to hear Gurcks' opinions on the Ipod now that you've mentioned it, if I'm going to be spending an arm and a leg on this thing I'd like it to do what I want, be durable and last a long time too.

Nope, I'd be happy with being able to store 2-5gb at a time.

Oh and ideally I'd like something that doesn't require unique software.

check out either an ipod or a creative player- id use them both before making a decision.

most of the people who dislike ipods do so because they dont like fads on principle, and hate the fact that it's just so damn perfect. :) I have a first gen one for almost three and a half years now, and ive never had a problem with it. personally, id never consider getting anything other than an ipod.

choosing your ipod: depends on how much music you want to carry with you. ive certainly got more than the 5gb my ipod can carry, but i dont feel the lack of it. really, how much of that 60gb do you really want at any given time? i just stick on 5gb of whatever im most likely to want: a couple playlists that i change around, and some of my favorite stuff. id just recommend the 20gb to you. its a good compromise between size, capacity, and price.

and itunes is by far the best music jukebox ive ever tried. i was using it long before i got an ipod.

As far as durability and lasting long, I can vouch for that, my iPod has survived 4 drops, 1 from 4 feet onto concrete. Main thing Gurck always uses against the iPod is its THC and SnR, but I really don't give a crap about SQ THAT in depth.

Then you'll hate iPods, iRivers, and Creative players, they all require unique software of some sort. I find Creative's most annoying, it installs what seems to be an overlay onto Windows Explorer for adding music, complete RAM whore

Don't invite Gurck's iPod trolling in this thread. Please just search for iPod and you'll find 10,000 anti-iPod rants by Gurck.

If you want, I can summarize his criticisms:

1. iPod sound quality sucks
2. iPods are overpriced
3. iPod owners are sheep who are slaves to Apple's marketing
4. Arguments favoring iPod's superior interface are stupid; any moron should be able to figure out any MP3 player interface.

Just using numbers and facts, his first point is well justified, but my ears aren't superhumanly tuned for .01 db discepancies in my music. Most of the time I'm listening to the damn thing on a bus, and it isn't using Shures or Etymotics either.

I agree with the last 3 points, can't say anything for the first one as I've never actually listened to one.

His first and second arguments that I mentioned are perfectly valid (although the iPod Mini is competitively priced against similar offerings). My biggest problem with his iPod posts are number 3, which I find a bit offensive, and number 4, which he refuses to acknowledge as a valid counterpoint.
