What monitor to buy?

I need a new monitor badly. I'm still using my old Hewlet Packard Monitor I think it's the m50 or something it has like a 13'' view size. I noticed it's starting to actually hurt my eyes after a while and my cousins newer 19'' monitor doesn't do that to me. Anyways I was thinking about going down to best buy and picking up this one:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/ol...01011&type=product

I don't want to spend more then $220 on a new monitor. I noticed Anandtech recommends the Samsung 955DF and has for a while so is the Samsung 997DF just as good or better? I just want the picture to be nice and clear and not put such a strain on my eyes anymore. Thanks.

Well I've warned people...here some more of my thoughts on this monitor that I posted on toms...

Well it would appear as though the flickering is due to my old video card. I hooked it up to a a90f+ and it flickered on that too. Now I'm back to using my VX700 and it looks just so much better. Everything is nice and crisp. I loaded up Soldier Of Fortune 2 on the 997 and the colors were terrible compared to my old one. I've noticed that it displays some shades of dark as being brown as well. In GTA where everything in the distance was smooth on my vx700, it ws grainy and undefined on the 997. No ammount of setting change could fix it.

Aside from my video card causing everything to flicker, I think it's working fine, it's just a very bad monitor. Mike I suggest you return this pos...the A90f+ can still be bought from best buy for 200. Though that model has a distortion on the bottom of the screen. It's still much better. I thought shadow masks were good after using the a90f+ for a few months then using an aperture grille then going back to shadow masks I realize shadow mask are freaking crap and they all suffer from that distortion beneath the screen. Aperture grilles own shadow mask, although the a90F+ is decent. I think that shadow masks doing text better is bs as well. It's just not as crisp on shadow masks. The only thing shadow masks have going for them is they are easier on the eyes. I'm going to save for the NEC FE991, I've heard great thing about NECs. I believe my own vx700 is based on a Dimatron tube which I think is made by NEC. So my monitor actually still works, it's just the video card. I see why NEC gets so much praise now...6 years of use and still working, though it's probably on it's last few months.

The problem with viewsonic now though is that they freaking cut the waranties down to one year which makes me very very suspicious

I should also note that text display was poor on the samsung as well.

I would go with one of the last SONY CRTs they were the BEST in the buisness but Sony no longer manufacters them. You can find some great Refurbs with 1 year warranty.

I did on Ubid. I've been using it for 3 months now.. one of the best purchases EVER.

What's up with that quote?I have a viewsonic and I have a 3 year warranty. When was that written 2001? I think most CRT's are "almost" the same in overall quality. A lot of the differences has to do with your graphics card. It sounds like you have a really old monitor too. For pure text quality, many articles have been written saying that shadow-mask and invar shadow-mask tubes give the best readability. They don't do the best on pictures or graphics, though. Don't knock apertrure-grill/*****tron monitors. I have a Viewsonic G71+SB, a 17 incher, and I can read text of any size clearly and without glare.

I have a 997DF, and I run mine at 1024x768@100Hz. Absolutely no flicker. I used to have a dell aperature grille flat screen *rebadged sony*
and i like the samsung. Both great monitors, but I would pick up the samsung, simply since you can pick it up at a B&M
