What mobo to upgrade from 2500k to 4690k?

Hey all, well I've had this 2500k @ 4.4ghz(max it'll go) for what seems like forever! Wanna finally upgrade to a 4690k and a Z97 mobo and go Win 8.1, and if Broadwell is nice enough i'll sell my 4690k and just upgrade to that (it'll be compatible with Z97 mobos from what I read). I'm thinking a 4690k @ 4.7ghz will be a noticeable upgrade from my 2500k @ 4.4ghz, yea?

Now, what mobo do you guys recommend? I'm looking at $200 price range and that's it. This mobo is looking good Gigabyte GA-Z9X-SOC Force. Is that good or overkill? I game a lot & do some video editing, and that's it.

All my specs are in my sig. I'm running GTX 670s in SLI and 16gb Ram, so hoping this CPU & mobo combo will last me another 3-4 years like my current rig.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

why bother with all that just to switch from one i5 to another? at least go 4790k or just wait.

[thread=2389580]Meh.[/thread] (That's a test of a 4790k without overclocking, equivalent to an OCed 4690k.)

There are certain applications a 4790k (and its hyper-threading) would be good for, though, and video editing is one of them. A few games like BF4 too.

I would say you can expect at least 4.4GHz from a 4790k. 4.7GHz is far from guaranteed for either chip.

hey..in the new chips favor,I've heard they clock higher on air/water than 1st gen Haswell

I'd say the Biostar Z97 :D
Cheap and effective

Crysis 3has a very playable difference with an i7 over an i5 but only a few other games make any use of HT at all beyond 4 cores. that said, he is running SLI which has more cpu overhead. it would be senseless to "upgrade" to another i5 now especially if wanting to go with faster gpu setup down the road.

I see, thanks for the advice and yes I might consider the 4790k (its only $100 more where I live). However, the 4790k doesn't overclock much at all from what I'm reading, might as well just go with the non K version and save some money, yea? Yes BF4 improves with HT, so i figure since its Frostbite 3 engine will be used in dragon age 3 & Mass effect 4 that ill see those benefits...

The thing is I wanna upgrade to Win 8.1 with a new setup, cant use the same system cause win7 wont recognize a mobo change. I know there are illegal ways around that but dont care for it.

The non-k 4790 is only 3.5GHz base clock. Why? I don't know, but it is.

You're reading something wrong..and why would you want to mess with Win 8.1?
Absolutely the K sku will clock much higher.

Ah ok good to know! Back to the K version then!:)

Win 8.1 is much improved... Ive tried it & liked it. As i added in my post, win7 oem wont recognize a mobo change. I know there are illegal ways around that but dont want the hassle & think the OS is worth paying for (its the one thing ill use the most!)

Dont the archictecture changes in haswell over sandy bridge account for 30~60% performance boost outside of gaming? I know gaming is gpu limited especially @ my resolution (1440p), but other than that its atleast a 30% boost, no? Yes video editing is what im looking at, so the haswell architecture & 8 threads should be good.

Anyways, what mobos do u guys recommend?

where are you getting 30-60% from? most reviews show Hawswell to be about 15-20% faster overall than Sandy Bridge. for gaming its much less.

forgot which review site, but they said in their conclusion that for 2500k its a worthwhile upgrade looking at a 30-60% jump in performance. guess they were exaggerating then.

anyways, I understand that for gaming its not much, but if BF4 is any indication of future FB3 engine games, I think it's worth it for me and coupled with HT on the 4790k my video editing will take less time.:)

So, the initial question, what mobo do u guys recommend?

Z97X-UD4H or 5H (BK edition). I'm running a Z87X-UD4H in my office box and its excellent for the price - the build quality is flawless and it has piles of ports/slots.

nice, but i like that the Z97X-SOC has the Killer E2200 NIC lanport....i'm a gamer.:)

any other features i should look for? The Z97X-SOC has 1 SATA-express port, but no M.2 port. is that a bad idea for the future?

Thanks AMD64blondie, but that mobo skimps on alot of features....

These are the features i'm looking for:

-a solid top of the line ethernet port
-M2 or SATA express
-top of the line power delivery for overclocking (preferably 16 phases, but 8 will do if 16 is too expensive)
-ability to use integrated graphics if need be (hopefully this is standard nowadays, but i was surprised my current z68 doesn't support integrated graphics of the 2500k!)
-solid USB 3.0 performance
-good cooling and lots of fan plugs (i have 6 fans on my mobo, 2 for CPU, and 4 for case)
-solid reliability and stability (Gigabyte has never failed me on this end, which is why i never switched)
-$200 price range

any mobo in-particular that fits all those?

I was investigating the ASRock Z97 Pro4, I think it was.

M.2
SATA Express
Onboard video with HDMI
Overclocking features
Crossfire

Edit: Intel Gigabit LAN too. None of that Killer NIC crap.

Killer Nic is a worthless gimmick. Just go with an Intel NIC, which most if not all of the higher end boards have.

I would take a look at the ASRock Z97 Extreme 4. It has 12 phase power, M.2, SATA Express, Intel NIC, plus the fan connectors you need for $ $128.99 (after $15 rebate) with free shipping.

I think the range is more like 4.5-4.7Ghz!

Temporarily, I have 4590Mhz on 4790K in Asus Z87 Pro (with NH-U14S).
On Monday should have new Z97 Deluxe (and H110).

If you want to know if there is any difference in OC between the two chipsets, let me know.

If you like Gigabyte, you should go with the SOC Force that you like so much.

If you can wait to scratch the "upgrade itch" and if the next new thing from Intel (Broadwell?) is really coming out this fall, it might be best to wait and see?

Warning if you upgrade now: Hazwell has AVX2 & FMA3.
Apps that use these will make your OC unstable and/or add lots of heat.
Prime95 v28.5 uses AVX2. Prime95 v27.9 does not.
I guess I can't say my OC is stable because the temps get so high the CPU throttles, but at least it doesn't BSOD right away now on Prime95 v28.5! I'm hoping the AIO water cooler will do better :)

Well, we don't know if that's referring to IPC or raw stock performance. a 2500K at stock vs a 4790K at stock should come close to 30%, no?

Of course, that's irrelevant.

what wait why? You got an awsome rig allready? If I absolutly had to burn money on PC parts it would be haswell-e, upgrade the SLI or SSD's ..
