Wait for the R350 Pro if you intend to go all out, it should be out very very soon. I'm not up to date on mobos though. 512 - 1g ram, Prices are very low and will go up eventually.

Go ahead and get 1 gig ram since the prices have finally come down.

I assume you'll be putting a cd-burner in. Get the fastest lite-on you can :)

Do you work with large videos, or want to backup dvd's or have lots of data or anything? If so, you could get a dvd burner. They aren't that expensive anymore. $150 with a hot deal.

I would go with a Granite Bay MB and a P4 with HT. You can't beat that right now.

You have a lot of choices so just start looking around.

Asus P4G8X Deluxe has everything you seek in a DCDDR motherboard w/ HT support.

I was seriously looking at this but wasn't sure about the ram...
Will this board take the fastest out there?

Sure, PC3700 DDR will work fine in this board.

if you haven't gotten teh bonus yet, I would wait for springdale or canterwood, which i thoguht would be released by the end of march or april. They'll probably be easier to get than granite bay, less expensive, and by then ATI should have R350 out.

I just went through this myself, but I got tired of waiting and ordered everything yesterday.
This is what I have already bought for the new rig.
Mitsubishi 2070SB 22" (black)
Logitech Elite Keyboard
Logitech MX-5000 mouse
Thermaltake 5000 case (black with side window)
Antech true 480 PS
Sony fdd (black)
$1,050
This is what I ordered
Liteon 16X DVD (black)
Asus 52X CD ROM (black)
Plextor 48X24X48 CD Burner (black)
P4 2.8 (retail)
2 512mb sticks of Corsair XMS3200 matched pair
2 120gig WD SE (8mb c) (raid 0)
Hercules 3-D Prophet 9700 Pro (retail)
Audigy 2 Platinum with black faceplate (retail)
Windows XP Pro (oem)
All silver round cables
Thermaltake cathode case light (green)
$1,750
All I need is a MB and Speakers. NewEgg says Tuesday for the Gigabyte GA-SINXP1394 (SIS 655). I'm waiting for Logitech to get rid of the bugs before I order a set of Z680s'. All said and done, I'll be out over $3,600. choke choke and who said building your own computer was cheaper.

Wow!...Lots of stuff!!!

I didn't know it would be that much...
Haven't started adding up yet
I'm afraid to...
Although the year end bonus is over $14,000...
my boss called the other day to tell me he processed the bonus, and asked me what I had calculated.
Said my $14,000 was a bit low...hehehehehe:D

second that, building comp for a friend with that same board. looks good. its pretty much an a7n8x board for intel. and from what i've read so far, granit bay (e7205 chipset) can't out proform 845ge/pe boards, only advantage at this point is features, but i'd say give it time to be tweaked or for a second gen with that chipset and it will start preforming well. :)

don't go with the GXM D-5.1, its underpowered. they are just pretty (at least some people claim they are). they are only rated 100w for all drivers. now, if money is no object, go with the 5.1 digital dream multimedia system. its basicly the promedia 5.1 with the decoder. those are about the best you can get, but also about as expensive as you can get. if wanna save a buck or to, go with 2.1's. i still don't see why people need surround sound for you computer. :-/

I'd strongly suggest the boards based on the SiS655 chipset. While the P4G8X can use the RAM, it won't operate it at proper speeds. SiS655 boards can operate at Dual DDR400/PC3200 speeds.

The gigabyte board suposedly supports the 800MHZ FSB in the future so i'd get that.

Chalk one killer chipset up to SiS. They were the ones that ousted the i850E as the performance leader. LOL. SiS? 3 years ago, who woulda thought? They have been doing *very* well on the performance chipsets, latley.

The more I read, the more I think this may be the way to go...

One thing ...should I do the Raid thing?

I'm going to try the onboard raid with the 120 gig Western Digitals in raid-0

Why do u need 3 optical drives?

You could have bought a single DVD writer. AND might as well go raid 0 with the scsi cheetah drives.

I want the best of all worlds. I want to watch DVD's so I need a dvd player. I need a new burner, so there's the Plextor and the seek time on the DVD and the plextor arn't as good as the CDROM. Plus the CDROM rips faster. I know, it's overkill, but what the hell it's only like $40 for the DVD and $35 for the CDROM

DVD writers are too slow and expensive. I know I spent alot of money, but 2 scsi drives and the controler are just too much. I did think about it though.
