I want to get a minidisc recorder so I can record my practice sessions(I play the sax). I would also like to use it to listen to my favorite tunes. Any recommendations? I'm looking for something in the 150-200 price range. I'm a student, so money is an issue.

Any recommendations? Any deals around?

My sister plays the piano and I bought a Sony portable md player/recorder for her earlier this year. I think the model number was rz-55. about $240 from best buy. It is excellent small piece of equipment. Some people like Iowa better, but I think it's just matter of taste. You also need to think about good microphone. I bought 5-15000 Hz Sony microphone for $70. 5-20000 Hz microphone was about $200.

If you are interested in the Sony MZ-R55 model, I have a mint, used once, set with everything in the original box that I'm trying to get rid of since I dont use it.

Email me if you're interested Saxman.

In terms of player/recorders, the Sharp and Sony ones are the best. The MZ-r55 is a great piece of equipment, although slightly out dated. For the other brands, I'd stick with their players only. I have an MZ-r50 which many consider to be the best recorder/player ever built. It is rather bulky and outdated, but I still use it to record from the computer time to time. For the most in portability, I went with a separate player only... but since you probably want to record on the go, I say go for the MZ-r55...

Yes I have a Sharp MD821 very good indeed...I highly recommend getting a set of Sony 888 earbuds to go with it for maximum bass... :)

The Sony MZ-R55 is an older model and is known for its notoriously short battery life. Otherwise it's fine. The MZ-R90 is the current top of the line, but will cost you over $300. I'm pretty sure you can get the MZ-R70 for less than $200. That might be your best bet. Both have much better battery life than the MZ-R55. The R70 doesn't have an lcd on its remote though.

Sharp makes good md player/recorders. I have one myself. You can find good deals on an older model like the 722 which is a bit bulky and has a slot loading mechanism. That's the one I have and I got it for $150.
