What might the reasons be that I can't connet to wireless network?

Just wonder what the reasons (besides a partly defect network card) could be that I can't connect to a wireless network.

Settings on the router are: SSID enabled, no security or encryption, no mac filtering or any other security setting.

The network is visible in the wireless network list with a 100% signal. It also says that the network is open.

The router has been reset for this issue already.

When I choose my wireless network and try to connect to it, it fails. The network card refuses to accept an IP-adress (ip settings on client are set to dhcp as is the router). When I connect a cable from the router to the computer everything works just the way it is supposed to. Nic drivers in device manager looks ok.

The router is a three years old Netgear router and the wireless nic is some kind of card (with an antenna that is placed on my desktop) that came preinstalled in the HP computer. I have tried with a wireless usb nic from Netgear and that worked fine.

Should I conclude that the nic that came with the computer from HP is defect. The card has been replaced three times already.....

are both devices same 802.11 standard? Ie.. is the router G and your card G, or both B, for examples?

It sounds like this or settings issue along this line. What model router do you have and what wireless nic is in the pc?

A solution:

1. Uninstall and then reinstall the installation CD that came with the router. Make sure router is off.

2. Follow the directions on the install screen exactly. This has worked for me in the past.

3. Make sure the wireless card is the same vendor as the router!!! I don't care what any sage says about the 802.11X standard and interchanbeability between vendors: Vendors have manufacuring peculiatieis. I installed a wirless PCI card in my wive's desktop- a Belkin card for a Belkin pre 802.11n router and I have the Belkin PCMCIA crad in my lpatop. No problems ever.

The router (a Netgear) is a few years old so it is only 802.11b.

The wireless nic in the HP machine should be 802.11b and g.

The router is 1 meter away (have tried various distances) from the computer and the signal status is excellent/very strong. I just can't connect to the network, even though there is no security enabled on the router or on the computer.

Reinstalling everything had no effect.

I guess I will just have to get a Netgear wireless card instead, since I tried it earlier with a friend's card (worked fine).

Did you read the content of the link in my post above and make sure that WZC and the original wireless utility are Not runing in the same time (check Win XP services as well)?

Did you try each one of them by itself?
