1. AIM - inceasing popularity due to purchase of icq and the ability to chat with aol members.

2. ICQ

or 3. MSN Messanger - Microsoft is trying to make this a standard as well as windows media player with windows xp.

I use AIM, specifically for that reason, all my newbie friends are on AOL and I have to attempt to get them off of it and onto cable! :D

AIM...cleaner program and interface than ICQ, and everyone I have a desire to talk to is on AIM.

I use Imici for Windows and Linux. It communicates with AOL, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ and its own IM networks.

Trillan.

For whoever asked, Trillan is a messenger that allows you to talk to people on AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo!, and Trillan's own network.

I use Aim the most. I have AIM, ICQ and Yahoo Messenger. I just like the way AIM works better than ICQ. It's easier to use and does everything I want it to do. Yahoo to me is a close second but very few of my friends use it so for me it's AIM all the way. I know AOL stinks but they do have a good piece of software in AIM. I have been using AIM since the week it first came out.
