what memory to get? Kingmax or crucial? 1.6a p4s333 setup

Hi all,
just wondering which memory to get, crucial or kingmax ddr.

also, do i get ecc or non ecc?
i'm looking for ddr 2700 or 2100 unbufferred cl2.5
thanks

Well , I plan on getting the exact setup as you and I will be ordering kingmax because it is the best ram... it easily does 166 easy easy and a guy on hardforum posted benches of his ram @ 204 fsb and it was amazing stuff... so anyway Im going with kingmax

stay away from kingmax. some people get 5ns chips which will do 166MHz, some people get 4ns chips which will do 200MHz, some people like me get 7ns chips which can't go any higher than 133MHz. if you're going to get the kingmax, don't get it from newegg. i'd recommend getting the corsair PC2700 or the OCZ PC3000. it's not that the kingmax is bad, but if you get a bad stick, they have no website tech support.. eventually i'm going to rma mine because it has a "lifetime warranty". but i tested it on an asynch mobo and it wouldnt do 133/166MHz at +.3v, CAS3 safe settings.

this is their 256MB PC2700 i'm talking about. feel free to go with it, but my experience has been horrible.

If you order from Kommax.com you won't have that problem. On their website, they list the RAM as being -5ns RAM, so that should be exactly what you get. It's only a little more expensive than the newegg.com price currently, and the -5ns stuff will overlcock well.

First post BTW.....

Im running that exact setup, P4S333 with a 1.6a, Im running Crucial 256mb sticks (2) at the hastest timings in the BIOS.
currently at 2415mhz adn 150 fsb, but the memory stopped working stable at 145fsb so I run it at 4:3 (roughly 113mhz)

don't be so sure. look the stuff up on pricewatch and you'll see newegg also claims to have 5ns chips (at least they used to). if you email them about it asking for ram with 5ns chips, they tell you they don't advertise ns ratings. pure BS.. i think that kingmax is just really inconsistent in their chip selection or something.

tapir, I think you may be a victim of fraud or an older batch of DIMMs, although any ram rated and tested at PC2700 should run at those speeds. If it doesn't send it back, that is if you were smart enough to buy it from a place that won't give you BS...

5ns should = 200MHz
6ns should = 166MHz
7.5ns should = 133Mhz
and so on...

I seriously doubt that any 4ns Kingmax modules exist, as those DIMMs with 4ns DDR ram should hit 250MHz without problems.

I live about 5 minutes from Konmax in Arcadia, CA so I drove there and looked at their Kingmax RAM. The chips say "-05" on them so I bought 2 sticks ($93 x 2 + tax = $201 total). I hope they're 5ns. I'll play with them today.

FWIW - I called Kingmax tech support and they told me all the DDR333 RAM is 5ns. There is no other according to them.

<< I called Kingmax tech support and they told me all the DDR333 RAM is 5ns. There is no other according to them. >>

Now if they would just update their PDF data sheets to reflect that info :disgust:

Well, I've heard that newegg now has the 5ns modules, so I may be returning mine.. gr.. my computer only has the one stick of memory, so I'll have to retire it for about a month.. RMAs seem to take forever to process. Hopefully, though, when I get the -5ns stuff, I will be able to o/c my system to the desirable 150MHz FSB 🙂.

I saw the -4ns thing on some review. Dunno if its true or not..

I use Kingmax on both of my SDR & DDR system....no prob. Fast & stable...not to mention its overclocking prowess. The SDR PC150 hit 152 @ CAS2. The DDR PC2400 hit bout the same @CAS2.

The only problem with Kingmax is that they offer several grades thru vendors who may/may not include all the info or substitute one grade for another.

When you order from Crucial, it's factory direct and you'll get exactly what you order every time.

I've used both and never had a problem with either, but I suspect that a RMA would be easier with Crucial.....

If you want the creme de la creme, check out Mushkin, you'll pay for the privilege....

Thats BS now... Crucial is now sending out samsung , infineon , and another one I cant remember along with mt so you dont know what your getting anymore.. I guess its cause they had so many orders they couldnt make enough??

Hhmmm....

I'd heard that 512 meg sticks of Crucial had infineon chips, I thought there was some technical explanation for it. First I've heard of them using Samsung chips. Neither is junk, though. Didn't Micron buy out Samsung's memory operation?

What I'm sure about with crucial is that if I buy cas-2 pc133 sdram or cas-2.5 pc2100 ddr that's exactly what I'm getting, not something lesser that might run at that speed. SPD isn't just the easy way out, it's also a tool....

I have several sticks of crucial, micron chips, I bought cas-2 and they detect as cas-2. I have a stick of Kingmax bought as cas-2, but it detects as cas-3. Contacting the vendor, they asked if it would run cas-2 at 133, which it will, but that wasn't the point..... And that's not to say anything bad about Kingmax, either.

None of my systems will run reliably past 143fsb, but I suspect that the Kingmax would crap out before the Crucial.... Kingmax set the eeprom on my stick at cas-3 for a reason....

I didn't bother to take my own advice and ordered 512 meg of PC3000 366MHz OCZ ram from OCSystem.com for $88 per 256meg stick. No tax and shipping wasn't bad.
Hope I have good results.

I have a related question. First, Kingston isn't the same as Kingmax, is it? Just wondering because of the similar names.

My real question is that I have two 2100 256MB sticks and I was wondering which was more likely to be a good OC candidate. I'm putting together a new P4 1.8a system this weekend. I going to use either a Crucial stick that I bought when it was about $33 or a Kingston piece that I just bought from Gateway. I'm not sure what the speed of the chips are as one is scheduled for delivery Friday and the other is currently in my brother's system (he gets the slower peice.) 🙂

Thanks,
D.

I recommend Kingmax PC2700, especially since it's almost as cheap as Crucial now. I bought mine (-05 chips) from Googlegear and it does 187MHz, default voltage without breaking a sweat. Clearly it could do even higher if needed.

Crucial PC2100 is also great, but what's the point of getting a Sis645 motherboard if you aren't going to take advantage of its PC2700 support?

how do you run at 187 fsb, doesnt your pci bus freak out?

i have Kingmax PC2700...5ns chips...i run fine a 160 fsb, but any higher & my registry craps out..pci bus to high...how are you getting around it? also, if people are setting mem to 4:3, isnt this slowing your mem down.. wouldnt system performance will be slower then one running normal settings on the mem???

<< how do you run at 187 fsb, doesnt your pci bus freak out? >>

150MHz FSB, 4:5 mem ratio
