What memory configuration to go with?

I'm going to be making the switch to a c2d system fairly soon and will be getting ddr2 800 RAM for it. I'll be running Windows Vista 32bit and will use the computer for 3d gaming, programming, movies, music, photo editing, regular browsing.

I want at least 2gb, but since RAM is dirt cheap nowadays, I'm trying to figure out what would be the best configuration:

* 2x1gb (dual channel, tight timings, 1T, 100% used)
* 2x2gb (dual channel, tight timings?, 1T, only 75% or ~3gb used)
* 2x1gb + 2x512mb (dual channel?, tight timings? 2T?, 100% used)

opinions?

dont worry about tight timings and 1T, c2d isnt like your current rig.
My vote, 2x2GB.

I say 2x2GB because, like you said, ram is so cheap now may as well get it. Then only 2 of your 4 slots are occupied so later should you so choose you can put another 2x2GB in there for your (im guessing) 8GB limit.

I've had no problems w/ Vista x64.

that's the impression that i get: memory timings have very little real world impact, whereas the amount of memory does.

however, considering the software that's out now, what advantage am i really going to see from 4gb of RAM (of which I can only use 3gb) compared to 2gb?

if hes not even gona use programs that take up 3 gb..windows is not gonna perform any faster. for every day use, 2 gb is more than enough..

I take it you're an XP user?

I think i can get nearly unanimous agreement that in Vista, the more RAM, the merrier.

Yes, 4 GB is faster than 2 GB in Vista, even if it's a basic use system.

Memory management is far more pro-active in Vista, hence why most of us Vista users have jumped on more RAM.

brikis98, get 2x2 GB.
It's dirt cheap right now, allows for future upgrades to 8 GB, & will help in Vista.

never realized that, but very useful to know - thanks. time to start looking for good 2x2gb deals 🙂

Well everyone says it is. But i'm actually installing it on my E8400 system right now and it looks like there are no vista 64 drivers for my Dlink DWL-G510 wireless card. Looks like i'll have to go buy a new card.
