What market will AMD hold this summer and beyond among AT enthusiasts?

So we all know Core 2 Duo is going to be released anytime now, and not only is the performance outstanding but the pricing seems reasonable.

So with next generation chips on the market at good prices, what incentive will exist for the average AT enthusiast/gamer to purchase an AMD chip? Can I pretty much conclude right now that I WILL be buying an Intel chip if I upgrade this Christmas?

Guys, I'll level with you here, I haven't owned an Intel part of any sort since my Pentium 200 MHz. I don't think I can do it!

Wait until both AMD and Core 2 are released, maybe....?
I think maybe actually seeing final performance and pricing might be a good idea before judgement. But that could be me.

I'm no intel fan either, but if they have better performance at a lower price then thats what I'll buy. Tough luck for AMD, but thats the way free markets work.
I assume that AMD has something in the works to counter Conroe, if not they will have to cut prices.

If well priced good ocing mobos are out AMD will be in a spot of bother ;)

Did anyone read the Core Duo vs Opty AT article?, Yonah is a bit better than the Opty clock for clock in most (almost all iirc, pity that Aopen board is $290 USD ;)) apps, and it overclocked better...Conroe/Merom should extend that quite a bit from what we've seen so far...

EDIT: as per usual we'll all start by announcing loudly to each other than the 939s we love may be slower than Conroe, but they are vastly more than adequate...then a few people will show up with Conroe and they won't shut-up about (reasonably enough if it lives up to what we've seen so far), CPU will be full of threads about Conroe's pwning 939s, and gradually we'll see a shift over to the dreaded intel...unless AMD can hit back with a real gem reasonably soon with AM2 (and they had better hurry, since intel won;t be standing still either)..or (and imo this is more likely) we don't see the kind of mobos that have allowed AMD to become so popular with us overclocking enthusiasts at a reasonable price...

I probably won't be changing processors until at least the beginning of next year, but if this go like they look like they're going too...I'll probably be setting foot in intel teritory for the first time since my overclocked celeron and be6-II combo.

I will call the processor conroe though, because I'm not saying core 2 duo outloud.

Well if Conroe comes out in limited supply then the prices will likely be 25%+ any listed MSRP. Hopefully the manufacturing giant after all ready delivering the P-M cores in quantity will succeed in satisfying the demand. I can at least say however AMD will not be able to answer the Conroe for at least the 2nd Quarter of next year.

I think many enthusiasts already have a high end A64 or Opteron rig, because AMD had the lead all this time (still do technically), so even if Conroe does beat out AM2 by as much as people are speculating, there will not be much reason for me to buy a new mobo, cpu, ram, and possibly other components just to get a Conroe. My Opty 165 is fast enough for anything I throw at it right now, so I'm not upgrading until 2007 at the very earliest.

Judging by the fact that Im building a new 939 rig atm, I think they will still have me (if you want to know why im building this rig when AM2 and conroe are just around the corner, PM me or something)

I'll wait to see how the landscape is when both AM2 & Core Duo 2 are available for me to buy.

Speculation is fun and all, but it does little to really help the situation. We don't really know how things are going to play out. Intel might do something to hinder overclocking potential if they want to push their higher end chips for their seemingly more than fair prices. Most of us are salivating over $200 low end Conroes with hopes of clocking them right up there with the $500 Conroes (stock or even overclocked). If Intel doesn't let us do that, then suddenly AMD becomes a viable option even if they are soundly beat in the shear performance department.

Ok, then there's the possiblity that assuming AM2 is going to dissapoint, and Conroe is going to deliver, AMD could still have tricks up their sleave. An early quadcore (X4 anyone?) or perhaps cheaper dual dualcore...

We won't know until we can actually get our hands on what is going to be available, its just hot air until then. I remember when Prescott was supposed to give Intel a fighting chance against the A64, we all saw how that was a big step sideways. They seem to have done a better job at giving us convincing evidence that Conroe will be worth the hype, but there's always the chance it won't live up to that hype, at least not fully (as in it could still be the best processor you can buy, just not as obvious)

I think my next upgrade will be next year as well...either Conroe or AMD K8L, depending what's on offer at the time.
