in those threads that post a simply question "what's your favorite color?" or "if you could be intimate with a cartoon character" or "have u had sex before"...I think they are great because people get to talk about themselves...it is in us as humans to want to talk and share everything about ourselves...how many of you guys really read through those threads? or do you just hit reply as soon as you've read a few of the posts to get an idea of what others are looking for? often I've sed something completely random and no one has replied back...what this shows me is that many just hit reply and share with the rest of the community something small about themselves...there many ppl in ATOT can post tons w/o having read what others have had to say...implications? i dunno...I'm just trying to demonstrate that people love to talk about themselves (inherently selfish behavior I guess).

I encourage more to post and self-diagnose your own replying patterns. This however might contradict my hypothesis since those that post are only ones that want to share themselves.

I think, pamchenko, that many people just want to express their opinion, their sense of humour, their expertise on a certain subject without really getting into a discussion/conversation with anyone. I'm betting a lot of people don't really care about what others post, but secretly hope someone notices what they say and comments on it.

I almost always read every post in a thread before posting. The exception may be in those 300 post+ threads about abortion/politics/drug legalization, ect. I may cheat a little on those

Also, in many of my posts I'll try to make a rebuttal or work off of a post made by someone earlier on in the thread.

I do see where you are coming from though, and have noticed it before.

I usually post for conversation, not to just simply hear myself blow wind

I agree, interesting topic. I usually try to read almost every post in a thread before replying. The exception would be a reaaaaaaalllyyy long thread where I would read enough to get the "gest" of what was going on. I post for my enjoyment and sometimes try to help when I can.

1 out of 10 after mine has read my post... after my lengthy reply, I asked those who read it to put an "x" at the end of their post. only 1 out of 10 did so, there were two 1 word responses ... I guess ppl do really post for themselves and not for the community. I was talking to myself for most of the time

mini results, look down for my post, and after it

ofcourse I am going to stop counting data since pointing this out in a separate thread can affect whether or not ppl place that "x" in...I'm not saying what those ppl did was bad in any way, it just shows how ppl love to talk about themselves or share their own opinions... that's why are there aren't as many good listeners out there as thinkers

edit: most of those replies don't seem to be thought out at all, but instinctive answers...me personally? if i don't have something meaningful to say, I don't post at all...why post something obvious or without explanation? is that fun in anyway?

ya know, if someone said something like that -for me to put a letter at the bottom of my post, I wouldn't. Why would I? You can't infer that people didn't read your post just because they didn't put an &quot;x&quot; at the bottom of their posts.

I read most of the posts. I also look to see who posted. If it's from people who don't usually post anything worth reading, I skip over it. Simple.





But, then again, many posts are worthless to begin with. And, there's nothing selfish about explaining a part of your life to a group of other people when the rest are doing the same thing. That's what's expected in OFF TOPIC. Don't complain because you didn't want to read a long listing about someone but suffered through it anyway. :|

I think this is a very interesting topic. Take last night as an example, I knew my thread (that was locked btw) on porn film titles would generate tons of replies. How so? Well for one it's something one can rarely discuss in &quot;normal&quot; social situations. This is what's great about the internet, you can hide from reality and truly not face the consequences of your actions. If I discussed openly with a group of people I just met my desire to name the funniest porn film titles, they might view me as quite crazy. But since you guys have never met me, and probably will never meet me, we are both free to reply to such socially unacceptable topics without the worry being rejected. The same could apply to some of the threads you singled out. Furthermore, on a lower level of reasoning, it's simple to reply with one word to these types of threads. In short, I think selfishness could play some role, but I think other factors contribute as well.
