Anyway, I tip well if the waitress is going to marry me :D

Yeah, I know, I haven't been posting in a while. :) And no, you haven't, but it's good to know. ;)

Fast & friendly service, good food quality.

Sometimes it's hard to justify giving a good tip (as opposed to standard 15% or no tip) if your waitress has been fast & friendly but the food sucked (which is usually the fault of the chef/cook).

the random thing really isn't random. You can usually tell how much a person will tip based on which day of the week it is.... what time, what they order and what they look/talk like. Pay days and old men are your best friends. As for what makes me tip good(I always tip)... I tip if a girl that gives good service and good humour or if I feel like I want in her pants. Be funny and make yourself look good and flirt a little even.

I guess I would agree with this. I get a lot better tips on Friday/Saturday nights then during the week. And people that are trying to figure out every little thing that comes with the meal generally are horrible tippers because they're usually cheap.

Act like you wanted me to be seated in your section, get my order right, bring it to me hot, keep checking back to see how everything is, including when it's time to pay and you'll get 25% out of me.

Now... I must say this. A tip is a tip... A single red cent is more than you had before. So I'd be thankful for even that.

True enough, but most waitresses work their butt off for tips...and a single red cent just isn't worth that much work.

Yeah, that's why I get the good tips from you- I know better then to use teeth. ;):p

:Q:Q:Q:Q

I'm going to make a companion post to this - "how to not be a complete a-hole customer"
It's become painfully clear to me that many people don't know how to function in public social situations, much less at a restaurant. Also most people don't know how restaurants work and blame all problems on the server. :|

If my drink is kept full, I drink large amounts of liquid, it makes me happy. I hate when they ask me "How is everything?" while I am eating, it pisses me off. Also don't try to talk to me about stuff other than food, I am there to eat, I could really care less about the waitress and her day.

Significantly special circumstances make this not funny at all. :frown:

If you don't like "How is everything?" then what do you like to be asked? And why don't you like that?

That's how I try to look at it. I'm a pizza delivery driver for the summer and it whenever there's a penny left (like a $10.49 order and they give me $10.50), I look at it as a penny that I didn't have before. Of course, it's not a $6.00 tip or anything (those are pleasant surprises). My dad, on the other hand (who is a huge cheapskate most of the time), tells me that I should carry pennies in my pocket and give them back there change and tell them that they probably need this more than I do. Whichever. I'll take the penny, thank you very much.

I don't like to be asked anything. Do you like to talk to someone when your mouth is full or you are in the middle of a conversation? I like them to take my order, fill my cup if they see it is less than half full and then bring my check. That's it no more, no less. They have to be nice and smile when they take my order/ leave check though. If they don't look energetic it makes me less willing to tip more than a dollar. If they are rude I don't give any money. If they hound me like a circuit city employee to buy desserts and etc. I will give them less money.

lol...so true. I don't mind a server checking up on me, but is it really necessary to do so every 5 minutes? If i'm eating with my gf, the server is the last thing on my mind.

BUT THAT SAID...i'm a terrible tipper my mom says, in that i over-tip. I just like to reward the server for good service. I think the last time i left a 10% tip was back 3 years ago when i was 16, everything now seems to be 20%+ tips.

If my glass is not empty for more than a minute or two (assuming you use the same glass, if I get a fresh one for every drink, then I should never have an empty glass,) courtesy is nice, too. And stop by once in a while to make sure I don't need anything, but not more than twice in a meal, too many times is almost as bad.

I base my tip on the cost of the meal unless it is a cheap meal, like breakfast, then I usually leave $5 if the above items are covered. Otherwise I usually leave around 15-25%, sometimes more though if the service was excellent.

Uh, I would think that makes you a good tipper, not a terrible one!

I know what you mean. I tend to leave really good tips when I go out to restaurants now.

1. Keep the glasses full. Bring me another soda before the one I'm drinking is gone... without me having to ask.
2. Ask me once how everything is. After that, don't bother me with talk.
3. Don't disappear for more than a few minutes. If for some reason there is something wrong, there is nothing worse than not having the waitress within earshot to fix the problem.
4. Be nice.
5. Look nice.

That will get you 20% from me. :)

Well, if you're truly "eyecandy", then I'd leave you at least 20%. A hand job under the table and your number gets you 50%. LOL

Everybody here basically has the right idea. Personally, I tend to frequent a few restaurants and there I'll give the standard 15% period, even if it wasn't up to par. I don't need somebody to recognize me and remember I stiffed them and "personalize" my meal, if you get my drift. If its somewhere I've never eaten b4 and won't eat at again, I'll cheap out on the tip if the service warranted such. Usually, I just tip a little extra anyway. Being in foodservice is not an easy job.
