What makes you leave a good tip?

I recently started working as a waitress and people seem to leave me tips at random. Sometimes when I think I've done a good job, they leave me crap. Other times I think I'm not doing so hot and I get a good tip.

What do you base your tips on?

Keeping my f'ing water glass full. If I have to start crunching ice, or if i look and it's empty... bad news bud. :|

BTW: I think for the most part you will find it is random on the whole.

Yeah, but usually it's the busser's job to keep the water coming. So why should the waitress have to pay for them slacking off?

It's hard to base tips on service as everyone may have differing values of what good service is. I generally leave 15% for normal service. If I feel a server went out of his/her way to serve me then I'll up it to 20%.

But other factors that tend to make me leave a larger tip is if the waitress is a hottie and if I frequent the restaurant.

For some reason no one tips here in Iceland but when I'm in another country it depends on two things. First the bill and how it adds up to the bills I use (dont want coins) but if I get excelent service (mostly a plesant waiter that makes me feel welcome) then I add a bit more to it.

HAHAHA. I saw this thread, and then this thread underneath it. I'd better ellaborate...
This thread title: What makes you leave a good tip?
The other title: My daughter...

Anyways, I almost always leave a tip. The nicer, and more attentive the server, the more of a tip I leave...

1. Be attentive. For instance, I was seated at this one place, and the waitress wandered around aimlessly, without realizing that anyone was actually there. If she hadn't been yucking it up with the other staff members, maybe she would have noticed...

2. Be fairly fast. I don't mean you should bust your butt to get back to every table, but when it takes 10 minutes on a slow day to get some bread or maybe a salad...Ehh..

3. Check back as often as you can. When I'm sitting there, waiting for the waitress/waiter to come back because I need some more ____ or they forgot to bring me some ____ or what have you, it gets annoying. Especially if it's needed for the meal (IE, a knife is missing from the table, we need extra napkins, etc.)

4. Try not to argue. Don't be a asskisser but I've had a few instances when the server insists I am wrong (IE, I ordered no mayo on my burger, or no tomatoes on my salad, or whatever - random examples) and will fight as if it's REALLY that important to THEM, or that I am personally insulting them.

5. If I ask you to take a lot of trips back to the kitchen, don't be an ass about it. It might mean you get a bigger tip for your trouble.

6. Try serving with skill. I won't go into it here, but if you know all the proper techniques to serving, and someone notices, it could impact your tip in a good way.

7. Smile a lot. A smiley waitress always helps the mood. 🙂

8. Be quick to explain menu items. If someone is confused about a selection, explain it as helpful as you can. If someone askes you what the best _______ at the resturant, or YOUR opinion on something, give it with a smile. It's appreciated. 🙂

Just a couple tips. 🙂

(Anything for nik's girlfriend. 😉 😀)

I tip well if the person seems genuinely friendly.

I tip significantly less if I have to wait for my bill when I'm done eating.

Timing is everything. Watch carefully so you know when they are ready to order, then bring their drinks, then bring their food, refill their drinks, ask if everything is okay, and when they are done take the utinsels away. Then let them stay as long as they want without bothering them every few minutes to try and get them to go away.

It's all timing.

Good service, friendly atmosphere, and they get a generous tip. Anything short of that, and I never return after leaving a comenserate tip for the poor service.

Eye candy. 😀

A combination of several things for me: Service quality, friendliness, and promptness. If the server was trying really hard to provide the best service possible, I'll hook him/her up with a FAT tip (I tipped 25% yesterday).

If the service is slow or mismanaged, and the server recognizes that and apologizes, that helps. However I tipped this one waitress well because she was really cool and sat down and talked to us, and apologized for the slow service because she had a hangover. 😛

But then, I always tip at LEAST 15%, because I have a "been there, done that" bias. Spent a year in a restaurant and was sick of people stiffing me on tips.

Being nice, fast service, and a bit of luck.

My friends and I are all excellent tippers. Our last two meals we ate at Ollie?s (which the waitresses were both extremely kind and we got the food extremely fast): $22 order, $8 tip, and $44 dollar order, $13 tip.

Thanks! 🙂

Sometimes I feel like if I'm too attentive then I'm interupting their conversation and just being annoying.

I have noticed, though, that guys tend to tip me better then s do. Also (no offense to anyone) generally foreigners do not tip as well as Americans.

There's a hamburger joint in town that has a waitress that looks like o pRon star, (enhanced chest, small backside, pretty face) I noticed her counting her tips yesterday & she must have cleared $75 in tips for the breakfast & lunch crowd.

The 50 year old + men were in heaven when she waited on them. I half expected them to try to slip the tip in her g string.

😀

I tip 10% much the time, 20% if the service is good; beverages kept filled, attentive, but not a pain. If I get really good service, I call the manager over & compliment the service.

Hi Chels!!! Have I told you today how much I love you?

Anyway, I tip well if the waitress is going to marry me 😀

During my young life (heh), I've asked many gf/waitresses about this very thing. They all have a common view...women never tip well. Certain ethic groups don't tip well. Certain religeous groups don't tip well....just get used to it.

Now me on the other hand... Any waitress acting fake around me gets the std. 15%. If they are genuinely friendly, and try hard, they can get much more. FYI...a waitress in a bar will always get bigger tips. Alcohol+food+pretty waitress=big tip.

I usually leave a good tip. Sometimes after drinking i leave a bigger tip than i should (good thing i cut down on drinking)

The look of concern that the person gives me.
Smiling.
Attentiveness, but not being overbearing.

I'm generally a good tipper, unless the person is a jerk

Yeah, I know, I haven't been posting in a while. 🙂 And no, you haven't, but it's good to know. 😉

Unfortunately, not everyone tips 114%!!!:Q

This tends to make it difficult for a server, because different people have different likes.
