What makes F.E.A.R. so graphically hefty?

Go kill this guy

Oh you failed he got away
Oh wait he's over there go get him
Oh he got away

Quite inventive I dare say
You can water down any game with this kind of description. HL2: Get away from bad guys; shoot bad guys; ride away in hoverboat; shoot bad guys; ride away in dune buggy; shoot bad guys. Doom 2: Shoot bad guys; find keycard; shoot bad guys; rinse and repeat. You see where I'm going with this? Good, I don't want to type anymore.

You are more than welcome to your opinion, just don't make FEAR sound like a complete piece of crap game using your logic.

You've got a point, but to be honest rstrohkirch hit the nail right on the head. I didn't even know who I was supposed to be killing or why exactly. I mean I kept looking at my objectives thinking WTF WHY IS THIS STILL MY OBJECTIVE? I mean the entire game is the same damn objective. You get no satisfaction out of it that way or feel of accomplishment because you never accomplish anything! When I finally did get to the part to kill the blood sucker (why he feeds on human flesh, who the F knows. Let's be honest, who knows what's going on at all in this game.) I didn't even know if I really even killed him because I was in the tripped out dream state. And I also didn't understand why I killed him or why he just let me kill him execution style. I mean WTF is going on? I'm really not retarded I promise, but I don't understand what the hell is going on in this game.

real time shadows for lots of stuff, lots of realtime lighting..halflife just cheated on that. and yea the particles were nice, the face models were pretty smooth, although the eyes still look dead since they don't track u and don't converge on a point. i guess its like the doom3 engine, more realistic/dyanamic lighting and stuff, but less on the textures. halflife does textures and cheats the lighting...

It seems like every big release that comes out someone's going to pick it apart for this or that. For every FEAR critic in this thread that's praising "X game" there's a critic of "X game" ripping it apart for other reasons. The simple truth is there's no perfect game. They all have their strengths and weaknesses and how good a game is all depends on what the individual playing it considers important.

I'm a couple of hours into FEAR and I think it's pretty good so far. I think it runs rather crappy considering my rig (see sig) but overall it's a pretty good game. The graphics are nice and the AI is among the best I've seen.

Ya, Textures are pretty average, nothing special. Lighting, Particles, and other visual effects are excellent though. AI also stands out compared to other titles. Great gun battles and getting creeped out makes it all worthwhile.
