What makes a redneck red?

From another thread...

What make a redneck a redneck? is it the car they drive? The house the live in? Jobs? Family size? Hobbies?

I wouldn't consider myself a redneck. I make a decent living as a network/server admin. I'm a geek. I usually drive a small car ('88 VW) but I do have a big, jacked up pickup (It fit my requirements/price, so I bought the truck, I didn't care what size it was) because I needed to pull a trailer. I don't wear a cowboy hat (or really any hat..sometimes a ball cap, usually a beanie, because I shave my head). I have a pair of cowboy boots, but they are reserved for when I am out working the horses. My work attire is usually a nice pair of jeans, clean T shirt, and sneakers. If I am dressing up, it's a nice pair of jeans (CK's today) (sometimes dockers) and a golf/button down shirt. I haven't worn a tie to the job since the interview. I own horses (fairly new addition to my hobby list) and ride 1-5 times a week, depending on schedule and weather. I live out of town (who wants to own horses in town?) about 30 miles. There is nothing but open land going up a beautiful mountain canyon in my back yard. My house is a southwesterny style home, with tile all through the house, 1' thick walls and adobe/stucco inside and out. I only own a single .22 rifle for target shooting, and may get a shotgun soon, but just for shooting clays.

contrast this with my brother, (who I think IS a redneck). He doesn't wear any "western" clothes, doesn't ride horses/own lifestock, has a stock pickup truck, lives in a trashy trailer, in a trailer park (that house has holes in the floor that he has nailed plywood over to cover them up). He is an oilfield roughneck, has enough guns to put a card carrying member of the NRA to shame (plus knives, bows, etc). Hunts about 6 times a year (not counting small things like quail hunts, etc). He lives in a rural city (not too rural, my HS graduating class was ~500 people, closest other high school was about 30 miles away).

Cliffnotes: I don't think I'm a redneck, but I think my brother is...or are we both?

I wouldn't necessarily say you are a redneck, but you're definitely country. Your brother, on the other hand, seems to fit the bill. Living in a trailer screams redneck.

i lightly consider myself one. i wear boots and ratty jeans to my job, drive a massive '79 blazer. oh and hunting? 6 times a month. it's nothing to be bragging about, just the way i was raised. dont get me wrong, my family and I are well off in our home, circle of friends.

People tend to confuse the term redneck and white trash too often.

Country or even a hick would probably fit the bill....

My wife is from rural Idaho where it was ~30 miles on the freeway to their mailboxes.

but I still wouldn't think of them as redneck (they are farmers)

Aren't redneck/white trash almost totally interchangable?

Only when out with the horses. I used my workboots for a while, but found some on clearance right when I was needing a pair, and bought them to try out. It actually makes riding easier imho.

Depend. Redneck/hick/country seem to be use interchangeably. Does Brokeback Mountain strike your fancy as well? Horses, cowboy boots....

There are rednecks everywhere. Even in New York!! *gasp* :Q

315 area code is NY States designated redneck location.

Wiki:

In the greater Rochester area, the term "315er" is an insulting way of referring to residents of the rural area east of Rochester. The term was popularized by Alan Levin, a.k.a. Brother Wease, a host on radio station WCMF in Rochester.[1]

You might be a redneck if you can't differentiate between "your" and "you're".

Living in a trailer alone doesn't automatically make you redneck but it comes damn close. It was when he mentioned the holes in the wall covered by nailed up plywood that sealed the deal. The rest. . .the guns and hunting and stuff. . .that's just icing on the cake.

I use it....There are times when you can't get to my in-laws without four wheel drive+chains + lift to get you through the drifts.
EDIT: And I want to put 40" on there...hey, if you are going to overdue it, really overdue it....

as an FYI, I didn't put the lift kit and tires on, it was that way when I bought it. It would cost too much to drop it.
