What makes a person an intellectual?

It sets up a system by which one can judge one's shortcomings. They don't hand out D's to the underperformers in school just to make the "A's" feel good.

Someone like spidey or ProfJohn would be C- to D. a777pilot is consistently D-. matt0611 would be an F.
Pointing this out lets them know where they stand.
If they make no efforts to improve, that's just another failing to add to the lengthy list.

It doesn't happen often, but I do so like it when I am around such people. Only near-equals or betters can serve up a real test.

Wow I didn't know you were an ass hole. Hmm... learn something new every day it seems.

Intellectuals are those who realize their own ignorance, admit to their faults and weaknesses, and try to learn more.

Quasi intellectuals are ones who think they are not ignorant.

A lot of people come here with a big fucking chip on their shoulder; ready to do battle and assume anyone not ready to war on the same warped set of assumptions as they hold are, in fact, stupid as all hell.

Turns out...
Turns out..
People can honestly disagree with you and, oddly enough, NOT be stupid.

But then you knew that :-D; I guess the post was for the benefit of DS.

Imagine that!

When anyone says anything, just pinch your chin and say "hmmmmm.....quite." Also wear glasses and dramatically take them off in the middle of a sentence.

Actually I'm surprised. I've seen a few posts form DS before that seemed level headed enough. He seems to love ponies which is fine with me 😀. Never saw this side of him.

Well looks like this intelectual as been...

Booked...

*takes shade off slowly*

YEEAAAAHHHHH...

Most of the so called intellectuals these days are quite close minded and simply believe whatever their superiors on the social and political ladder tell them to. Those who disagree with them are labeled as ignorant, uneducated and barbaric. Shame.

I would never brand myself with such a term, there are far too many negative connotations and outright falsehoods attached for me to associate with that specific group of people.

The time of free thinking is largely gone. People simply do what they are told.

Pretty much.
Jack Cashill talked about this in his book when discussing San Francisco. Eventually liberal minded people stop thinking new ideas cuz they just assume whatever they believe is automatically correct.

True intelectuals are simply people with an insacialble thirst for knoledge, usually in one of the academic fields. Maybe if you could seperate your aversion to liberals from this you wouldn't dislike them so?
