What makes a good alcoholic beverage good?

Most people I've encountered won't say this but it seems like the consensus is, if you don't throw up the drink and the least appalling the aftertaste, the better. Is this true? I mean I can understand what I'd want out of a drink, one that has the least worst after taste, but if I'm going for that, shouldn't I go for the best vodka and avoid wine and beer? This whole alcohol thing confuses me because I constantly hear testimony of people of what a good drink is yet those drinks usually just have a lot of hops.

With red wine it's a balance of certain appealing flavors. Green pepper + sulphite + water = bad. Deep black fruit + leather + white pepper = good. (Plenty of combination out there that different people prefer.) Length of time the flavor lasts, how much and in what ways it changes from the point it hits your nose/tongue to the point it fades away, how long it lasts in the bottle and how it changes, those all contribute.

Miller, Budweiser, yeah I don't think so.. Also I've spoken with some beer drinkers who say that they just drink it like a shot, avoiding the flavor. You don't savor the flavor by keeping it in your mouth before drinking it, do you?

Taste. Of course taste varies amongst drinks, but flavour is (IMO) the only reason to really like a drink.

Umm people like what they like. Maybe they like the taste?
That I won't believe!

You're the last person to try and be an elitist snob.

The people you describe are not the same ones who like the taste of a quality beer. They are drinking to get drunk, and domestic beer is some of the cheapest alcohol you can find.

People who drink wine (not the boxed variety) and beer (the craft kind) all DO drink their alcohol slowly and savor it.

Like absolutely everything else in life, it's wholly subjective. Personally I want it strong and flavorful. I want to taste alcohol more than other flavors (which are fine as accents).

Yeah, there a handful of cheap crappy beers. But there are hundreds of good tasting beers.

Some people drink soley for the buzz and don't mind the lousy taste. Some people care about taste and spend more to get something good.

I'll add that some people probably get used to the crappy taste and think it tastes just fine or even good. It's not just with alcohol either. If people drink the dirty water at my work that they try to pass off as coffee, then they're either drinking it solely for the effects of the caffeine or they've gotten so accustomed to it that they think it tastes good.
