What are some makes/models of cars that you think would represent the automotive equivalent of a basic, off-the-shelf $500 PC?

Ford Fiesta, Chevy Sonic, maybe a Toyota Yaris. They function, but aren't anything special.

an 1989 Honda Civic Si... :p

More likely look at the cheapest cars, but even teh cheapest cars have the basic safety, so something like a Nissan Versa Sedan ($10K approx) or Kia Rio or Hyundai Accent or toyota yaris, the new sonic.. you get the idea...

Equipments vary even for a $1000 dollar difference.. so price shop the standard options.

Thanks, folks! Good answers.

Soooo.... If a basic, off-the-shelf, $500 desktop PC is, say, that $13,200 Ford Fiesta, what make/model car would represent YOUR rig?

A 1990 Ford F-150 with a turbocharged V-8, low mileage, wide tires, a rusted out bed and a busted front headlight.

I'd compare a $500 PC to a ford Explorer or similar top heavy SUV with the smallest engine option.

Not very fast, not very good on the efficiency/economy of energy usage. And can't handle worth a damn. but, for day to day driving, it works just fine for most families, and it has extra room in the back for that rare time when you need to haul shit.

MY PC at home ... ehh ... the pair of 6870s and the i5 with the 640gb raptor hooked up to a triple head monitor setup probably place it in the slightly obscene side of things, but, since I 'm at least using a PC Power & Cooling 80+ Silver rated power supply .. I'm somewhat good on energy usage... And the monitors are all LED backlit 20.5 inch displays ... Also, I use a wired mouse and an old IBM Model M keyboard.

I'd say it compares to a CTS-V.

Comfortable to use, plenty fast, and decently practical, even if it's obscene :)

My rig is like four Bugatti Veyron Super Sports pulling a Rolls-Royce chariot.

Civic or Corolla.
I largely base that on the fact most of the domestics have a bunch of dumbass electronic shit in them that ruins nice simplicity of cars.

My Civic is very simple, and I like it that way. dials for climate control, dials for radio, not much else going on in there. But it works.
