what made you stop texting and driving?

I used to be a road warrior. 15-20k miles a year and a smartphone is a bad combination.
For me it was a near accident. Even though I was familiar with the road and knew the bend coming up ahead, I was oblivious since I was so focused on texting. Nearly hit the car in the adjacent lane.
Ever since then I stopped texting.

For some, all it takes is news of a horrific accident. For others, it may have to happen to them firsthand.
For me, a near miss is what it took.

The fact that I can't see the road when I text was all the indication I needed that I shouldn't do them at the same time.

I never started, at least not like most people. I even had someone try to argue with me that texting while driving was safer than answering your phone while driving. At least talking on the phone doesn't require your eyes to be averted...

I only did it once and it sucked. I almost went off the road. It was an "emergency" text and I was on the taconic parkway so I didn't have a shoulder to pull of on.

I still text and drive but I live in a pretty empty part of the country.

When I'm in the "real world" I dont text and drive because its fucking stupid to do so. It doesnt take much to realize you have no damn clue where you are driving when you are staring at your phone.

I havent had any close calls, near misses or any other incident but I do have a lot of common sense so I attribute my attitude on texting and driving to that.

I only text when I'm at a complete stop at the traffic light.

Same. And even then it's extremely rare. I wouldn't dare try doing it while driving. I get stressed out enough trying to finish the text and keep my eyes on the light to see when it will change.

All my friends died in car accidents from texting so I don't have anyone to text with anymore.

For once, being an old stick in the mud is a good thing. I wouldn't text the Pope if he asked.

O.K., maybe the Pope.

When I was a sophomore in college, I met a guy named Andrew. He was a cool dude and had a sweet old red car (maybe a Chevelle or something). Anyways, we hung out a few times, usually just skateboarding. At some point we stopped talking and hanging out...our friendship was weird. I always saw him at the same time, and on specific days...had something to do with his class schedule. He was a real good dude and meant well to everyone.

He was killed driving back home one day a few years ago...his pickup (not his cool red car) crossed the center line on the highway. A semi hit him head on. I am guessing he was texting...hopefully not me...

That is what made me stop texting while driving.

It's a shame that it takes a close call or an accident to get people to realize how fucking stupid it is to text while driving. You'd think this would be common sense but I guess some people just don't have much of that.

I have enough respect for the lives of others on the road.

I don't have a problem with doing something stupid and killing myself, it's the fact that if/when an accident occurs, it could easily involve someone else. How could you possibly live with yourself after causing an accident that killed someone - a daughter/son/brother/sister/mother/father - because you were too big of a asshat to wait 10 minutes to text someone back "That cat vid wuz LuLz"?

Haha I know that road too well. Especially those sections near the 84 interchange where the shoulderss are gone plus the lanes are more narrow than usual PLUS a tall stone wall on one side.. fun times!

But yeah I dont text n drive unless its an emergency then I use my Android's voice recognition to send messages. Out of all the thing I try doing while driving texting is I feel the most distracting/most dangerous
