What made people drink the Kool-Aid?

JEDI

Lifer
Wiki

ok, some of the followers were duped, and their deaths classified as murder.

but a vast # of people knew what they were drinking.

Most of the time people commit suicide to end the pain. But i suspect not in this case.

So why did they go thru w/it?

edit:
fixed link

Evidence of Revision 5 of 5 - The RFK Assassination Continued, MK ULTRA and the Jonestown Massacre - All Related.avi
This is the mindblowing 5-part video documentary series Evidence of Revision whose purpose is to present the publicly unavailable and even suppressed historical audio, video and film recordings largely unseen by the American and world public relating to the assassination of the Kennedy brothers, the little known classified "Black Ops" actually used to intentionally create the massive war in Viet Nam, the CIA "mind control" programs and their involvement in the RFK assassination and the Jonestown massacre and other important truths of our post-modern time. The U.S. Government's Orwellian "Office of Public Diplomacy" has been in existence in various forms and under various names since World War ONE. The union of American governance and American corporate interests began in Abraham Lincoln's day and the massaging of "public truth" began even before the Roman Empire. The more you know about "real history" versus "official history", the better equipped you are to see behind the lies of our times, even as they are told to you. Evidence of Revision sweeps "official truth" into the dustbin of history as it may be revised even as it is being written. Each part cca 100 min. long, 8 hours all together. A must see for everyone. Part 1: The assassinations of Kennedy and Oswald as never seen before Part 2: The "Why" of it all referenced to Viet Nam and LBJ Part 3: LBJ, Hoover and others. What so few know even today. Part 4: The RFK assassination as never seen before Part 5: The RFK assassination continued, MK ULTRA and the Jonestown massacre... all related. Video specs: Video codec: divx, 720x480, 768 bps Audio codec: mp3, 44kHz, Stereo

Religious types will believe anything. They thought they were going to their particular afterlife which would be a better place. It's no screwier than any other religions view of heaven, reincarnation of whatever fairy tales they use to convince themselves that death isn't the end. Kool-aid for your religion or strapping a bomb around your waist for your religion, what's the difference?

I assume they were brainwashed. It's a cult practicing under the idea of it being a "church" of some sorts. It's the same thing as Heaven's Gate.

"Applewhite convinced thirty-nine followers to commit suicide so that their souls could take a ride on a spaceship that they believed was hiding behind the comet carrying Jesus; such beliefs have led some observers to characterize the group as a type of "UFO religion."

Let's be honest here....a lot of people are easily brainwashed. People are sheep for the most part and they'll do crazy stuff.

I hope that conspiracy theory link is a joke. I wouldn't dare click on it, but those are the other brand of wackjobs who will believe anything they are told.

speaking of Heavens Gate, I read that they each had $5 worth of quarters on them because they were told there was going to arcade/vending machines on the spaceship.

now thats hysterical.

Jones had conditioned and prepared his followers to use suicide as a political protest. They had practiced many many times before it actually happened.

First, your premise that it was religion is wrong according to a poster a couple posts above me.

Second, just becasue your feeble mind can't get behind the differences between Kool Aid and a bomb doesn't mean your idiotic point is validated. Your statement and reasoning are the things fairy tales are made of, not "religious types" whatever that umbrella means to you.

But they looked good in their Nike's. Besides, what was the point of living after some of their earlier devotions?

I thought the guards had guns and forced most to drink.

This is the answer. There were very few actual suicides at Jonestown. Most were murdered, either by being forced to drink the Flavor-Aid or by being forcibly injected with cyanide.

Hey, let's group Christians, Daoists, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Confucianists, Sikhs, Hindus, Tribals, Wiccans, and Catholics all together under a negative and inaccurate stereotype. This was supposed to make you look better than them? More enlightened? More capable of rational thought to avoid letting your emotions blind you and lead you to saying or doing something foolish? It didn't work. It's never going to.

Besides which, your own post is religious in nature. Do you even know what religion means? Check your dictionary. Here's what mine says:

1. The beliefs, attitudes, emotions, behavior, etc., constituting man's relationship with the powers and principles of the universe, esp. with a deity or deities. 2. An object of conscientious devotion of scrupulous care: His work is a religion to him. (Funk & Wagnalls Standard Desk Dictionary, Volume 2, 1984)

Oh, and where you say religious types will believe anything? I don't believe that.

This is another case where I wish I had no ethics - this could start out as a dare or bet with friends. "I bet you that I can get 50 people to voluntarily and willingly kill themselves in the next year."

1.) Start a cult.
2.) Do the mass suicide thing, only I don't drink the poison.
3.) ??????? as to not get caught.
4.) Profit.
5.) Let society be grateful for the slight reduction in the local moron population.

Jim Jones was a socialist who was very active in political causes. Typical cult of personality socialist dictator. Religion was just a tool for Jones, and he was openly critical of Christianity and the Bible.

edit: BTW, the official Guyanese government report is that only 3 people out of 900 at Jonestown committed suicide. All the rest were murdered. Most had been forcibly injected with the poison, while the rest had been shot or strangled. The whole story of mass suicide with the Flavor Aid is a myth. That's probably the way Jones wanted it and planned it (and even rehearsed it), but when it came time to actually drink the poison, most of the people wouldn't do it.

edit2: Also, if it hasn't been mentioned before, PBS will air an award-winning documentary on Jones, Jonestown, and the Peoples Temple tonight on American Experience. It's supposed to be very good, with lots of actual "home video" footage, etc. Check your local listings.
