What luxuries (as defined by the western world) have you experienced?

I'm content in knowing that my every day living is probably more luxurious than 80% of the worlds population.

In "western" standards I really haven't done anything extraordinary. I had a $75 steak at Morton's in Chicago once. But it really wasn't that much better than a properly prepared one on my own grill for $12.

I've also stayed at $350/night luxury suites in Scottsdale, AZ and $200 a night bed & breakfasts in Sedona, but those really aren't all that special in the grand scheme of things.

OK so I looked up where 707 is and it's in Santa ROSA, CA if anyone else wanted to know like I did.

Porsches
Opinion: There really is no substitute.
Why did I have it: Fiscal responsibility and a willingness to make sacrifices in other areas.

$300-$500 hotel rooms (various hotels)
Opinion: Not significantly better than a $100 hotel room.
Why did I have it: Vendor conferences or deep discounts on rooms due to frequent stays or corporate affiliations.

707 is Santa Rosa, CA (and Napa). Santa Barbara is in the 805 area code.

Everybody posting here lives luxuriously compared to conditions most people in the world experience.

I woke up this morning in a clean, pleasant warm house located in a safe area. I don't fear being gunned down or taken prisoner unlawfully. I have hot and cold running water that's safe to drink and bath in. I have adequately large, safe storage areas for food and the means to cook it.If I become seriously ill I will be transported to the hospital within minutes and once there I will be treated regardless of my ability to pay.My children will learn to read, write and obtain a basic education regardless of my fiscal resources. I can choose to further my own prospects by attending one of several community colleges or state universities at an afforable cost. I can also chose to live anywhere I like and take up any field of study or compete for any job that interests me.

I'd say I live a life of massive luxury on a daily basis.

You drive a Prius don't you

$1000+ bottle of wine - Client paid for it during an outrageously expensive impromptu lunch meeting.

Can't think of anything else for the moment. Keep listing things, people, I want to get a to-do list together!

No, she sees beyond the end of her nose.

A-yep.

She neglected the big one, though: Health care.

Everything - and I mean EVERYTHING - is secondary to not having you and yours be dead. Life is precious, and it's rather convenient that most of us have jobs that pay well enough we can afford quite a lot of it.

This. The most expensive restaurant I've been to was about $20 per person.

It actually covers Napa, Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino Counties, and probably a few more. 🙂

That's why I specified by Western standards in the thread title. 😉 I'm more curious about the outrageous stuff.

Damn, red or white? What was it?

I was thinking the same thing as Geekbabe. But the thread title says Western in it so...

- Had shark once (at Red Lobster)
- Stayed at Hotel Derek in Uptown Houston for a week with a Mustang convertible (work paid for room, car, meals, flight)

I think that's it. Nothing crazy.

Sorry, my meter's broken. I had to RMA it.

Johnny Walker Blue Label....was ok but not a single malt, was a gift not something I would buy. Certainly not work the $200 price.

Montblanc Pens...they are ok, but better brands out there for less money, have owned a few of them as well (Pelikan, Aurora...etc).

Rolex watches...seriously a middle line watch when compared to others but with a big brand name, owned three, think they are fine but command a big markup. Also own an Omega. People make them out to be amazing, they are good, but brands like JLC, IWC, GO, Blancpain and many others are alot "nicer", I would say Rolex is closer to Breilting and Omega than anything else. Have also owned a Tag Heuer that was ok.

$500 dinner for two at one of the finest places in boston....was good, but the sister place that costs a third what I paid was just as good.

I have had other things that I wouldn't consider luxurious but some might, mostly going out to places to eat that were about $200+ for two, they were all ok but nothing overly amazing, then again maybe my expectations are too high.
