17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 - The lens is "OK". It has a nice range but I wish the picture was sharper.

I am mulling over getting the 24-105 f/4.0L or waiting it out for something faster with IS in the same zoom range. The new 18-55 f/2.8 seems interesting but its an EF-S which I'd rather avoid.

Just curious, why avoid the ef-s?

I just bought the 17-40L, I wisah it was a 2.8 but other than that it's amazing.

EF-S *may* limit your options in the future. At the moment, the 20D and 350D are the only cameras that support the EF-S mount, and such lenses, because of the way they're designed, would be useless on a Full Frame camera.

Exactly. With the full frame 5D out at a $3K price point, a much cheaper full frame DSLR should be right around the corner. I don't want to be stuck with an EF-S lens like the one I have now when that time comes.

Yes, that makes sense. I just went a little wider on my lense selection to compensate for the range I was on the prowl for..

Everyone has commented that this is a great lens, but is it really all that useful on a less-than-fullframe camera?

Nate

Yes, it's quite useful if you have only the kit lens and a 75-300. It's the only thing that can take decent indoor shots without flash. I have the rebel XT and there really is almost no need to put the kit lens back on anymore with the 50 1.8. I recall only two times where I put the kit lens back on - both times were for a wider angle to capture a room where space was cramped. I agree, the plastic is the reason people don't like it. It's hard to get a Mark I. For $70 you won't find a better lens value. Probably not even for $150.

For everyday crap I have a 50mm and 75-150mm Yashica lenses (nothing special, but not complete crap).

Real shooting:

50mm Zeiss T* F1.7 (kick-ass lens)
80-210 Tamron Adaptall-II F3.8 (not bad for a zoom, a "medium-high" quality lens)
24mm Tamron Adaptall-II F2.5 (a bit prone to flare, but a nice and fairly fast wide lens)

The Tamrons are decent lenses, nowhere near Zeiss or the very top of the Canon lens, but solid "high-mid" performers. Of course, my Contax doesn't use a common mount so my lens choice is limited.

I don't use the zoom much at all; even at 80mm it is longer than I use most of the time. My favorite lens for color is the Zeiss 50mm (arguably the sharpest 50mm lens available anywhere for 35mm), but I use the 24mm Tamron the most since I shoot mainly landscapes. I don't like AF that much since I don't get much of an advantage from it in what I shoot.

I just ordered a Canon 18-55mm F3.5

(my other lenses are in the second post)

I don't exactly like this lens but I found a really cheap price and I can justify the extra 10mm (18 vs 28mm) for a wider angle.
