What LCD should i get for xmas

i am going to ask the parents for an lcd screen for xmas, and i was wondering if there are any perferred ones out there. I am big into gaming and 2d stuff, and want to keep the lcd price to below $500. I read the system building thread up top and saw that the "NU QL-711V 17" LCD Monitor 16ms SXGA - $285" abd "BenQ FP931 19" LCD Monitor 16ms DVI SXGA - $431" for listed, but i don't know how good they are and how the rest of u guys thought about them. How are they compared to others and to the Samsung 710T that THG was talking about.

I'd get the BenQ FP931. It's ~$400 shipped at CheifValue.com, last time I checked, or only slightly more an Newegg. 16ms, very bright, and it has DVI input.

BenQ FP931 give you the most for your dollar, easily. Fast response time, good brightness and contrast ratio, slim bezel, good company...what more do you want?

17" is a bit small for my tastes (even if the resolution is the same).

ok, right now it comes to the Samsung 710, the NU QL-711V, and BenQ FP931. The former 2 are 17" with the benq being 19". The extra two inches in the BenQ, while nice, does not mean anything to do. At that size, the two inches means very little to me. What DOES make a difference is the price. The prices go $429, $259, and $419 respecivly. What i want to know is, which of those 3 are the best, and why. Moreover, are the Sam and the Ben so much better then the NU that they are truelly worth the extra $150 i am paying for them.

If size makes little difference, go with the Nu. The only reason for paying more is larger size.

If your looking for performance, I'd go with a nice souped up crt. Much better resolution for cheaper, allowing you to spend more on screen size.

Make sure you get an LCD with that as its native resolution then.

Personally I don't like playing games on LCD screens because they're too bright and I get a headache after a while. If you're going to be gaming a lot on this screen, make sure the brightness is lower (or you set it lower) so you don't hurt your eyes or get sick or anything. Just my opinion.

Now you're talking! (But sony doesn't make a 24" flavor...so you might be hard pressed getting them to custom make one for you).

I vote for the BenQ if you MUST stay under $500.

If you can pull it...go for the Viewsonic VP201b. It's the best gaming lcd I've ever seen in person (next to the sony sdm-p234/b that is).

When it comes to LCDs, its not something you want to go cheap on. I suggest the Dell 2001 fp (available at 17, 19 and 0.1 inches I think), its the best value so far and is probably the best retail LCD out there.

Oh yea....I forgot about these. The 2001fp is a great value for the money.

Also, take a look at the new 2005fpw. There's nothing like HL2 the way it was meant to be played...in widescreen.

So let me take back what I said earlier and rank the 2005fpw ahead of the VP201b. If at all possible, get a monitor that either supports 20" widescreen or 1600x1200 while still holding a 16ms response.
