I have no idea :p. I gave up on LCDs because I now need an immediate replacement and I don't have $400-$500 :-/ so I'm getting an NEC FE991SB this week. I have seen an Alienware PC at a store with a Samsung 191T and I played some games in it and it was an astounding monitor.

Ok...
NEC LCD1760NX
Planar PX171M
Hitachi CML174

All 16ms, 260cd/m2, around 400:1 contrast ratio (some have 450:1).
All around the same price with the NEC being the cheapest, and the planar the most expensive.

Ack! I don't know which one to buy!

I'm leaning towards the NEC because it is the cheapest.

I've noticed some people saying that they are really glad they went with an 18" or 19" LCD, and that size really did turn out to be important for them.

Should I go for a larger LCD?

Getting a 17" would keep my viewable area the same as with my current CRT...(well, I'd lose 0.5")

cheers...

I have always been of the assumption that bigger is better. I never skimp on my eyes - I use the computer too much. (Before my LCD I was using the 22" Mitsu 2020u.)

Right, so buy a bigger LCD and to hell with gaming and response times, or what?
I mean, the response time isn't just good for gaming, it's good for watching fast motion movies. And I watch a *lot* of video on my computer.

The other problem is price. I'm trying to get the price under $500, now...

Man, maybe I should just not buy an LCD now and wait to see what comes out. But I'd really like one - my *small* room gets so hot from the computer and the monitor, so one less super heat generating device is good. And I have a desk real estate problem - I'm running out of it - my 19" is a beast. And an LCD would be so much easier on my eyes. I get headaches sometimes from sitting in front of the comp so long...

cheers...

If I want to play Doom3, and I have a 17" LCD monitor, I'll need to run it at 1280x1024. Looking at Anandtech's GeforceFX 5900 Ultra review, Doom3 @1280x1024 showed the Radeon 9600pro getting 26fps. I have a Radeon 9500pro.

So if I want to get an LCD monitor, I'd probably need a new video card to play Doom3, huh?

Just so u know the 9600 is slower than the 9500, you can run other resoultions it just wont look as sharp as with a CRT.

According to Monitorsdirect.com, the Hitachi has a 5 dead sub-pixels return policy and the NEC has a *15* dead sub-pixel return policy.

Yet, (from a different thread)
There's the difference between the NEC and Hitachi. On the 1760NX you still have your color/contrast controls when using DVI.
I really like the NEC for this reason...

However, as of right now, the Hitachi is now the cheapest of the monitors...I missed my chance on dell. Damn...

Argh, this is really a hard decision...

cheers!
