Hi,

I am planning to buy my first laptop and I wanted to know what you think about the following brands and models:

Dell Inspiron 8500 widescreen:
This model can include a 32 mb radeon 9000 video card or a geforce 440 64mb one. THe geforce is faster right ? Has moderate battery life.

Dell Inspiron 600m 15.1:
This model can include a 32 mb or a 64 mb radeon 9000 video card. Features the longuest battery life and is thin and light. Using centrino technology.

IBM: Is it me or IBM laptops are just too much ugly ?

Compaq NX9005: This model uses a radeon IGP 320 M. How fast is that ? Uses shared memory I think.

Compaq NX9010: This model uses a radeon IGP 345 M. How fast is that ? Uses shared memory I think.

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.

P.S.: I was reading on the different types of widescreen displays Dell offers and I find that a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels is way too much for a laptop. I can imagine myself finding the fonts too small or having problems coding on it. What do you think ? I found it irronic to pay more and having difficulty reading what u'r doing...

have you considered toshiba? I have their m10-s405 and really love it. It uses the geforce 4go 420 32mb. It's not the best for graphics, but if i turn unreal tournament 2003 to 800x600 and kick the details down just a little bit it runs around 30-40 frames per second. It also has excellent battery life. You might want to at least look at a toshiba in addition to the dell and compaq models you are currently considering.

I finally decided I would go with the Dell 8500 but not now. ;)
Maybe in a few more months.

Thanks

The 8600 is out now. Take a look at the Compaq X1000 as well.

The Dell 8500 uses either the Radeon 9000 or the Geforce 4 4200...not the 440 like you said. The 440 is an MX, and is considerably worse than the Radeon 9000. The 4200 (a real Geforce 4) is considerably better than the Radeon 9000, and is actually better than the Geforce 5200.

And yeah, the 8600 is out now for about the same price. You can get it with a 128MB Geforce 5650.
