I suppose you're ignoring everyone else these last 2 pages as well. But let me sum it up for you very simply:

watch does one thing well: tell the time.

phone does many things well, one of which is to tell the time.

+infinity. It also only does that one thing well as long as it gets tuned up - my tag loses several minutes/year. ATT even figures out daylight savings time for me!

It can, but not as accurately generally, and it's definitely inconvenient to pull the phone out to check how far you've gone or what the time is when biking/running outside.

Again, watches still have their place. The point is that those places are few and the phone has replaced them in nearly every circumstance. Yet people still buy expensive watches and glitter and magical gold dust, but they don't do it for convenience when those same people have smart phones. It's become more of a fashion accessory as the usefulness and practicality of a watch has diminished.

My garmin is able to track much more data and display than any phone workout program that I've found. I also own RunKeeper for my phone.

Distance, Distance Avg, Lap Pace, Pace Avg, Elevation, etc. And I don't have to break my stride or pull it out while running. The garmin also has a virtual trainer function which I don't use.

Note, I do sometimes bring my phone with me while running but it's in my waist belt on my back side.

Yes they do, shut the fuck up already. Days I'm not wearing my watch I get annoyed that I have to take out my cell phone from my pocket or find a clock somewhere. That's reason enough.

a phone does more, but a watch is still more convenient for checking the time. that much should be obvious. I carry both a phone and watch, and use the right tool for the right job.

people wear watches for different reasons. yeah a lot wear them for fashion (especially the mechanicals), but some really do wear them for convenience, or simply out of an appreciation for the design and construction. all of them are valid reasons.

I almost bought a waterproof iPhone mount for my bike but one that is actually useful is rather expensive -- waterproof and not prone to overheating, etc.

For the record, I don't wear a watch but I am considering a decent cyclometer for the various reasons noted.

I got an old set of iPhone earbuds that broke, so I cut off the broken side and run with 1 ear bud. Changed the audio settings to mono and I'm good to go.

I run with an iphone as well but I am not a serious runner who might like more advanced stats readily visible. For cycling, a decent solution to not being able to hear the voice prompt would be a bluetooth headset but even then a cyclometer is going to get you a lot more useful information to improve your workout.

I wear a watch everyday.

* My gf doesn't like it when I'm always checking my phone. Actually, it's pretty rude when you're having a conversatin with someone to check your phone. It can also be rude to check your watch, but usually it's much better manners.

* My conference rooms don't have clocks either. I work at the largest corporate campus of one of the largest banks in the world. Some people do put their blackberries on the table. That's fine. I like my watch.

* I sail competitively. The way a sailboat race works is they blow a horn 5:00 before the start of the race, 4:00 before the start, 1:00 before the start, and one last one at the exact moment of the start. I don't have some fancy sailing watch, I use the same Timex Ironman that I use for everything else. I set the timer to countdown repeat at 1:00 and call out the one minute increments to everyone else on my boat.

* I also use the timer regularly for other things. Cooking/baking or heating up leftovers, set the alarm to remind me to do something (call someone or do something around lunch time.)

I realize that not everyone sails or cooks or gives a flying fuck if they are rude to someone they are talking to. If you find that a watch has no practical utility for you, good, don't wear one, and don't post in fucking threads about watches.

My usual Fossil from 10yrs ago the battery is dead and I haven't replaced it. The movement is dead as well. The lcd part keeps time and it has a stop watch on it. The dam f0cking swatch watch ticks SO loud. I have to take it off and throw it away when I'm in bed. It looks tiny on my wrists lol.

I guess it depends on what you need...I just needed avg stats and tracking, the rest was a bonus.

Oh yeah, $1.99 vs $$$ for cyclometers. Cyclemeter does everything that this thing does at a fraction of the price. Cateye's are even more expensive.

I beat the hell out of my watches so I usually stick to something $300-500 and replace every year or two. My wife gets a lot of nice watches from me though. She wants a white-gold Rolex one day, but I am not ready to drop $25k on a watch 🙂 I am looking at some in the $5000 range for her perhaps for her birthday next year.

I wear a Seiko Contura right now, it's about two years old now so I am about ready to replace it:

It's more shiny in real life and has facets around the dial that catch the light.
