Tag and Omega are nice, but I think you will have trouble with variety. Only a select few entry level models are in the $1K range.
I would suggest Oris, Hamilton, Maurice Lacroix as mediocre Swiss brands. Their quality is excellent (above bulova or regular seikos). You will have a wide selection within your price range and they have many classic looking models.
