What kind of round is this?

It appears to be a .30 Carbine case, with a 7.62x51 bullet shoved into it. So not a real round, but an amalgam of two different rounds.

That's what I thought too. Looks like a 30 carbine with a bastard bullet.

based on the fact that it's not a bottleneck, has a slight taper, and the caliber appears to be 7.62mm/.30cal, my guess would be .30 carbine. but i've never seen a fmj with such a sharp tip.

yeah, the straight neck, sharp bullet, and length... the combination is completely throwing me off.

is there a stamp on the base? Plus its jewlery... might just be a fakie?

sorry, im not up to speed on the terminology, is the base where the firing pin hits? if so, yes there is some wording there

if that, it says C L 1 7

in a circle at 12 o'clock, 3, 6, 9

Sure it's not L C 7 1?

Then it's a Lake City .30cal Carbine round manufactured in 1971. Someone stuck some other projectile in the end of it. So some sort of "fake" round.

Look like

this?
