What kind of RAM can a Dell Dimension 2300 handle?

It's for a friend's dad's work computer. It really need a RAM upgrade as it's going on 128 running XP.

Maybe try a memory configurator. I know that Corsair, OCZ, Crucial, and Kingston all have one on their sites that include Dell models.

My 2400 came with PC2100, I think it was standard 184-pin DDR SDRAM. Programs like Belarc said the Celeron had a 400MHz FSB, so if you're upgrading all ram (removing the old) then you can go ahead and get RAM like you would for any new system. (Ex. Corsair VS 512MB PC3200 x2)

That system uses PC133 non-ECC/REG type of memory. You can use either CL-2 or CL-3 and will take a maximum of 1024MBs. I would recommend getting at least 512MBs for Windows XP and make sure you do a BIOS update before installing the new memory.

If the computer is the office's property, IT should be taking care of it.
The owner of my work recently referred to me (jokingly) as the "IT Manager". If his friend's dad works at a small to medium sized business, then Auryg, being the guy who reads a techy forum, probably is the closest thing they have to an IT department.

I never realised how hungry WinXP can be for RAM on office systems. We've one PC which is a celery 2.x ghz w/ 256mb ram and it runs slower than a machine i recently discovered to be a PIII 700mhz with 384mb ram. We often have several apps open at once but none of them are really cpu hungry, so the only (frankly irritating) slowdowns etc is on loading and switching apps.

Yup, I'd be the IT department 🙂

He owns the power equipment place around here, and got the computer for free. I'm pretty sure I'm just going to recommend to him it isn't going to be worth the money, considering you could nearly buy a better computer for the price a stick of RAM will cost.
