I was looking into new/different software ideas. What do you guys use for like browser, e-mail, chat, compression, or whatever on a regular basis ? I was thinking I might be missing some interesting programs.

I use MS Internet Explorer & MS Outlook Express for my web and email use.
I used to use WinZIP and WinAMP but with Windows XP I don't need them anymore.
I also use Net Vampire as my download manager.

Other than that I play a ton of games and I occasionally do a bit of programming in Visual C++.

What? Do you have some sort of *problem* with propagating email viruses?
What are you using for email? Becky! works for me.

I use The BAT for email Small, fast and easy to backup. I have no idea why everybody uses outlook. Most email viri are aimed for it and everytime I turn around I hear someone asking how to back it up.

I recently switched to Power Archiver so I don't have to install 4 different types of compression programs and it seems to work great.

IE for browser

hotmail so IE for email too (Try Eudora if you dont like Outlook).

chat: ICQ. MSN is faster and everything but its microsoft and theres something about it that annoys me - it just wont damn well go away EVER.

compression: WinZip, most people scream WinRAR so much better but WinZIP just fine for me thanks.

Graphics: Paint Shop Pro is easily the best value for money and probably easiest to use. I Have CorelDraw 9 also, powerful but i it smentality, if you know what i mean :)

Windows Tweaking: Get TweakUI1.33, superb program and ive no idea why the hell it doesnt ship with windows, does LOADS of stuff for you, like get rid of the damned windows startup splash screen and gets rid of teh irritating login screen by doing it automatically for you.

Utilities: Norton Utilities: accept no substitute. even runs off the CD for those "OH SH!T WHAT HAVE I JUST DONE" moments. Its worth it for Undelete and speed disk alone.

AntiVirus: Norton 2001 (the alternative is McAffee).

DVD Movies: WinDVD came with my drive, PowerDVD equally as good. hardly any difference between them.

CD Burning: Nero. CloneCD seems to be installed on a lot of peoples comp's too, for the things Nero wont copy. Ive not had clonecd long but its never helped yet, i havent even burned a single cd with it. however clonecd is free, nero (tho loads better) is not.

Officy stuff: not really any choice but MS Office. StarOffice a free alternative, and whilst surprisingly good, just not the same. I'd reccomend StarOffice though if you dont need to do much officy stuff frequently.

MP3: WinAmp.
MP3 Converting: er i think Nero does this now... several free alternatives including MusicMatch Jukebox

Firewall: dont have but ZoneAlarm reccomended by virtually consensus. Tiny Personal Firewall also.

For games, RtCWolfenstein multiplay is fantastic, team based thing. Operation Flashpoint great also if you like a more realistic shooter, thats a cool 1 player game actually, lot sof people call it a simulation game rather than FPS :). if you get it theres loads of extras people have made too. i think www.comcept-5.com/ofp/ a good resource, tho ive not been playing/visiting for a while.

its actually pretty amazing just how much stuff you can (legitimately) get for free, even of the above I paid for very few: Nero, Norton AV, WinDVD all came free with hardware. I got a cheap upgrade for Norton Utilities by getting a free older version in a wesite launch giveaway (not that the install looked or asked for it, hmm). i think its perfectly feasable to have a multi-purpose computer where all you pay for is the hardware and Windows (you could always download Linux, but to be honest, for most people you have to have windows).

I like www.pcplus.co.uk downloads section, always a reasonable number of good downloads.

OS: Windows XP Pro

Web browsing: Internet Explorer
Email: Eudora 5.1 Pro
Firewall: Tiny Personal Firewall

Office Suite: MS Office XP
Antivirus: Norton Antivirus 2002

CD Burning: Nero 5.5.6.4
MP3 Player: WinAmp
CD Ripping: Audiocatalyst 2.0 (I installed the ASPI layer, so that I can rip digitally, instead of analog)

Chat/Messaging: AOL IM - all my friends use it, more than any other (i.e. MSN Messenger, ICQ), so I have to as well... *shrug*
FTP: WS_FTP 7.02 Pro

Defrag: Diskeeper 7.0 (I love not having to think about it anymore)
Compression Utility: WinZip
Others: PowerQuest PartitionMagic 7.0 and Drive Image 5.0, Cacheman 5 (for optimization)

I always add programs that I use for free and stuff that I find useful to my website, too. I've been able to find/retrieve all of these programs without having to purchase them, if you're pressed for cash. (Sorry....)

For normal computer operation I use ICQ, AIM, ZoneAlarm, Rain, Winamp, MSIE, and my MUCK client. For downloading I use mIRC, Get Right, and KaZaa (might ditch KaZaa for Audiogalaxy, stupid memory leak). For CD-Burning I'll be using Nero once I get a new CDRW. Utilities package, I've always used and loved Norton.

What games do you play?

Mainly FPSs (Quake 1-3, Unreal, UT, RTCW, NOLF etc) with a few RTSs, flight sims and RPGs thrown in for good measure.

I see a lot of the usual stuff. Somebody mentioned a ton of free stuff out there and another place to download a lot of freeware is http://www.webattack.com.

Stuff I use:

Browser: Mozilla/Opera
E-mail: Eudora/waiting for Mahogany to go to 1.0.
IRC: xirc
Chat: Trillian/Miranda
News: xnews
Compression: enzip/hjzip
FW: Tiny
AV: AVG 6.0
Notepad: Metapad
File Manager: 2xExplorer/GXExplorer
MP3: Freeamp
Shell: Litestep/geoShell
Defrag: O&O Defrag
Encryption: gnupgp
FTP: Leech FTP
Anonymous Proxy: Mproxy

Best of all is all that is open source or free.

I also use MS Office and Open Office, though I agree with the previous poster that Open office/Star Office just isn't quite the same, yet! And a couple other programs.
