I thought guitar might be neat too, but isn't piano a great place to start for basic music comprehension, then if she wants to move to another instrument, she'll have the foundation down?

also, I've heard of various teaching methods when it comes to piano, anyone here have experience with them? In particular, suzuki.

Yes, piano is pretty basic, but what about something cool like a harp?
It is a beautiful instrument and you can start with smaller ones.

Piano. I wish I had a background in piano.

I played bass from 4th grade on, and a background in piano would have been great.

So go for the piano untill there's an orchestra that she could join through school.

Yes, piano is a great place to start. You learn both clefs, and the layout of the keys helps give you an understanding of how notes are related and chord formation.

Beware, the piano is a gateway instrument, it'll just get worse :D

<---Parent of a music major going to college this fall. She's smart enough to do anything, but chose music. Dammed bassoon.

Yeah I almost majored in music theory, but wtf I would do with that degree, other than composing, I dunno.

piano, guitar, violin, flute, trumpet, and drums. she hasn't been exposed to many other instruments in person yet though so that list may grow longer

Start with piano. Many of my friends who have started with piano ventured off to other instruments. think of the piano as getting your foot in the door.

Didgeridoo. They sound cool and she'll be the only person in town playing one. There's lots of pianists out there. If an orchestra ever need a didgeridoo, there's like, what, 5 people to choose from? That's job security.

We just started our daughter (just turned 7) on piano lessons a couple of months ago. We bought her a keyboard for Christmas and she loved it so getting her into piano lessons was a breeze. The funny thing was, before we got her the keyboard we had asked her if she wanted to take piano lessons and she had no interest in doing that at all.

The good thing about Piano is that even if she doesn't like it, you can still use it as a nice piece of furniture.

also, you don't have to keep switching out for larger versions as your child grows older as you have to with something like the Violin.

Over the long term, I think Piano actually cheaper than violin even though your first Piano likely more expensive than your starter Violin.

The other benefit of Piano I think is that you can sound very pleasant without being terribly skilled whereas a lot of other instruments, you have to achieve a certain skill level before it sounds fairly decent.

Piano for sure. It's the base for everything else. Learn piano, everything else comes easier.

My daughter graduates in May with a BS in Music Ed. She had to learn how to play just about everything. She started piano a loooonng time ago and has said that it helped a lot with learning all the others.

yep start with piano, and if you can stand it and she wants it, get her a small drum kit and lessons. the process of learning timing will help her out in other areas

as for piano lessons, I started with the Thomson books, moved to Czerny, played an assortment of sonatinas sonatas, then Chopin waltzes/preludes/mazurkas, then Chopin Etudes, and finally some of the easier Rachmaninoff before I quit due to college.

I think its imperative to have a teacher that teaches good technique and under no circumstance should you start them out on an electric keyboard. Full fledged piano, accept no substitutes.

start with piano or violin.

I played alto Sax for some 15 years. Always wish I learned piano as well....

Violin can have a painful "weaning" period for the household, though ;)
