What kind of material stops case vibrations?

My hard drive is causing the removable side panels of my case to emit a low level (but very annoying) "thrum" sound and I am pretty sure it is caused by resonance. I want to install some sort of material on each of the panels because when I put my hand on both sides of the case the noise goes away.

Someone suggested dynamat... does that only surpress sound or does it get rid of vibrations as well? Are there any alternatives to dynamat and where can I find them?

Here's my solution to your resonance problem - pot your whole computer with Arctic Silver. It's a great fluid dampener, it's guaranteed electrically non-conductive, and best of all, it transfers heat second to none! I'll sell you 5 gallons for only $20,000 - that's $15,000 savings to you! I'll also make you a package deal for enough hedgehogs to cover the surfaces of your case - make it $25,000 altogether.

I would try the dynamat. Line the insides of your case, and then just use some duct tape to get it all tight. On the inside of course. I think that the duct tape would act as a good cushion, and the dynamat would solve any noise problems. Of course, I don't have dynamat myself, but I want some, and I will use it for my noise problems. Hope that helps.

or you could just get a big clamp and just clamp it tight.. that would take place of your hands. :)

Cheaper than rubber, cheaper than dynamat... Find the spot where the case is vibrating the most and stick a small piece of pencil eraser in between the two vibrating objects. Make sure its secure. Also, i'm not sure if you wanna try this if the spot in question is HOT.

You need a mass loader, anything that adds wieght. Dynamat is rubberish/concrete type material and was designed for this, adding wieght to reduce resonating noise not for acoustic abosorbsion. Theres plenty of other material out there thats just as good and better cost alot less, like Vynil sheet would work fine they have some out there that has iron inbeded. Really you could just fine anything around the house and just slap it on the the side panel too add weight to it.

Thats why when you put your hand against the area that was vibrating the sound goes away, just need to wiegh down that area, or fasten it tighter or put some squishy material between the two resonating objects.
