What kind of job am I getting into?

I just got hired for a job that pays $18.25 an appointment, for demonstrating knives to sell. Has anyone ever been in a job like this? This is my first job and I'm supposed to be going to homes and demonstrating them to customers, on a appointment basis.

My friend said I wouldn't be getting that many appointments when I work there, so i'm kinda doubting this job will be any good now, but the people i talked to seemed to like it, because of the good pay.

Also I could make more then $18.25. There is a guarenteed pay and a incentive pay, where the guarenteed pay is $18.25 while the incentive pay is 10% commission on sales, and according to him each sale comes to $190, so $19 per sale. It also can get bumped up to 15% all the way to 30%, after selling a lot, so I'm not totally sure what I'm getting myself into. Sounds to good to be true, and I'm 18 years old with no expierence in it.

Actually not many people want to do it, so it does pay well. As long as you don't mind being a 'door-to-door' salesman (I know you're not going door-to-door, but it's the same idea), it's not that bad.

hey are u working for vector? if u really work at the job and do well u can make a ton of money, one of my friends did it last summer, she did so well and sold so many knifes that she becase the area manager

Haha...Vector. They are a bit shady with their advertising, not telling you what you'll be doing until you go to their meetings.

Good old Vector. They advertise everywhere on campus by leaving either business cards or writing on the chalkboards "workforstudents.com."

Scam. It's a bullsh*t job. Ask yourself why it pays so well... it's because noone in their right mind would want to do it. If you like bothering people at home to buy crap, go for it.

Years (many) ago I was at my next-door neighbor's place when this salesdroid came over to demonstrate "Cutco" knives..

It sounds like a cheezy job to me.

Yup, it is Cut-Co knives and thats how they work. I know quite a few people that have done it and it is legit.
My roomate actually did it and we own a set of Cut-Co knives. They actually work really well. I am going to guess that this is a California thing though.

Wrong it is nationwide. As I said above they advertise all over our campus. As a point of reference I go to Purdue University in beautiful West Lafayette, IN. (sarcasm placed on beautiful)

they tell you it's no telemarketing or door to door sales... it's actually both!

the thing is they want you to sell knives to your family first. they say it's just for practice. it's actually because your family will buy them from you cause they feel sorry for you. then you get refrences from them and actually try to sell knives to strangers.

it's up to you if you have no problem giving knife demonstration in peoples homes... im sure it would pay well if stuck with it. but 99% of people who start it don't stick past the first meeting, i know i didnt.

OMFG... Vector Marketing... Cutco knives...

I tried that once.

You have to pay for your own demonstration knife set. You have to solicit referrals. Obviously, you'll try to sell to your friends and family, but after you've done that it get's exponentially tougher to find people who will let you waste their time with an "appointment". However, if you stick with it, you'll eventually get to sale "pot", meaning their pots and pans, meaning higher commission (and you can try to sell to all the people you tried to sell to before).

I can't help but wonder how much more money Cutco would make if they actually marketed their products like a normal company. I'll bet Henckel outsells Cutco year in and year out, and all because they are sold in department stores instead of "door-to-door", not because they have better quality knives.

Cutco actually has some of the best quality knives I've come across...

If you decide to give it a try, watch some infomercials to pick up techniques. For example, notice that informercials don't really try to sell the product. They try to sell you the benefits that the product provides. More free time, happier family, more friends, saving money, whatever. "Just buy these knives and all that - and more - is yours!"

Yes, infomercials are stupid, but they work.

very few people are good salespeople and it's one of those things that you are more or less either born with or screwed. so if you're one of the lucky few, you will do well in life, because you're in demand wherever you go.

the knives are actully pretty darn nice..

we have a set in our apt

we use them alot....

but like i said earlier...if u work your butt off u can do really well

you pay a deposit for your demo set- you can give it back to them anytime for your money back. so if you quit it doesn't cost you anything. you don't pay for the training they provide you (which is applicable to other sales and retail jobs).

I'll just stick to investing in the stock market, cuz I make good money with it.

Don't do it. You make the same amount of money being say, a Staples sales manager for a far better career future and less social stigma.
Or you can be a car salesman...which is the best paid, non-formal education required job in the US.

I have a friend who did this. I don't know if he made any sales, but last I heard he was too busy with school to go around selling knives.
