My PPO as a civilian provided FAR better care for $1000\mo compared to my free "universal" Tricare coverage in the US military. And it's easy to draw the analogue between Tricare and UHC for the whole country: There are no copays, so there's no disincentive for going to the doctor\clinic\hospital for every little problem. There's no competition between providers, so they can treat you like crap knowing you have to come back.

Tricare is run by BlueCross who has every incentive to make Government "run" health care look like shit. There's no reason that TriCare should be the model for the entire country. That's probably one of the worst models in existence.

UHC is a terrible idea, with terrible results. Liberals want to provide insurance to those they feel are less fortunate, when those very people have made purchasing choices placing insurance very low on their priorities list. They have cable TV and cell phones, but no insurance, so the bleeding hearts will swoop in and save the day by buying them something they could care less (to spend their own money on) about.

Cable TV and cell phones cost next to nothing, not to mention that a cell phone is probably their only phone. That $50-$100/month high deductable plan you're about to tout is money wasted for someone who can't afford a $500 out of pocket, let along $5000. That's assuming, of course, that they have no preexisting conditions that will jack up the rates and/or deny them coverage all together.

Being able to afford $1000/month for health insurance on top of your other expenses puts you in an entirely different financial league than someone who's "luxuries" are cable and a cell phone. Try some empathy.

My guess is that we've seen the last of GenX posting in this thread. He got seriously pwned and will be hard pressed to provide any rebuttal short of "I'm a drooling partisan hack who needs to complain about the D's no matter what".

The solution is to go after the insurance companies, the pharmaceutical companies, and the artificial limits on the doctor pool in America enforced by the AMA. Stop those 3 from raping consumers, and offer single payer. Make the insurance companies compete, for a change. Kill the restriction on negotiating on drug prices that Bush and Co. implemented. There's a reason drugs are 1/3 to 1/4 the price of the same thing here in America.

Dear angry mob,

Nearly all of the members of Congress could make more - often a lot more - elsewhere.

Sorry, but if you're paying $1000/month vs. free care, then you're an idiot. I guess that goes hand in hand with being a conservative.

I pay $300/wk for my health care and I don't get anywhere near what I would consider bang for my buck. If I or someone in my family needs anything major, that view may change.

I can tell you however, that I could certainly put that $15,600/yr to much better use. I'm also sure that my employer could put their portion, which is probably 3x what my portion is to much better uses also.

Congress gets the same insurance plan as the rest of Fed Employees, FEHB. Link posted already.

You don't hear much about it, because it's a very good program, and they don't want to hear complaints about their coverage, etc, much like their pay and automatic raises.
