What kind of hardware will be required to run Doom III?

I'm running some fairly powerful hardware...an XP1900+ with a Radeon 8500 and 256mb of DDR ram.

After seeing these screenshots, however, I can't see my system even coming close to running this game:

Any ideas as to the system requirements for this beast? I'm guessing a Radeon 9700 pro or an NV30 paired up with at least a 3.0 ghz P4/AMD equivalent.

I also read somewhere that the game would run on a Radeon 9000, but I find that impossible to believe. After looking at those screenshots, it's clear that this game is far more complex than any game on any platform to date. Is it coded for DirectX 9? If that's the case, the only cards that could run the game completely in hardware would be the Radeon 9700, NV30, and future cards.

The reason why doom 3 looks good is because of the lighting engine and the meticulously painted textures. Aside from this the polygon amounts and general detail are probably a bit higher than ut2k3, and with half of the screen being pitch black it will run alot better. A geforce 3 would be able to run it no problems.

It seems like everyone thinks this game requires an Nv30 to run it at 800x600, but it doesn't.

Last I heard, Senor Carmack said the game will run in 1024*768 with a Geforce 3 and a 1Ghz processor. This was in a statement about 1 1/2 years ago.

Actually now that you say that, after I read through the article that I linked to, it says that the in-game characters are actually low-polygon. I really hope this game will run on my system.

What's the big deal?

By the time this game is released, Granny will be using a P4 3GHz with 1GB of RAM to shop online! 🙂

Cheers!

Lol.. I think we have underestimated the current technology. Athlon XP 1900+, Radeon 8500 will run Doom III no problems whatsoever.

I heard the 9700 can only do 800x600, but I don't know how true that is....
I think that was in the last issue of PCGamer. They had a whole article about Id and Doom3. With everything on the 9700 could run it smoothly at 800x600.

Should run fine on a fairly good spec machine, ID are not going to release a game that only 10% of the PC owning public can play. There games have always been at the cutting edge but have always run on medium spec machines and I doubt Doom3 will be any different.

hmmm... maybe you guys should look at the writing on the pages in the original link...

it seems to say there that the 9700 is currently running it at 800x600, but i supose this would be with all the debugging code in the background, and as they say, performance will increase slightly (just look at UT 2003 compared to the technology demo that had been initially released), but still, you need stuff that is gonna be midrange when the game comes out, which would be the crop coming out for christmas!!!

It doesn't take much too "run" the game. However, with max details on and running it at higher resolutions, you may need a faster video card and/or CPU.

Isn't the Radeon 9700 still cpu limited in most games? I'm sure with faster processors coming out you can crank some more fps out. Also, the 9700 probably will run 800x600 with ALL settings on high, pretty, etc.... Isn't Doom3 supposed to come out at the end of next year. I'm sure we'll get at least one or two more generations of vid cards out before that anyways, let alone another ghz or two of cpu clock increases. Everyone wants to build a machien to run this game now, when it won't even be out til then. Chances are you can run it on a decent system now, but if you want it to run smoothe with all the details on high, you'll have to wait a few months.

i thought that at the last E3, id said that Doom III would be ready before the next E3 (that being the E3 in 2003). lets hope.

Ever run Commanche? That game has got to be the most CPU limited current game around. Fastest machines around really sweat to break 50 FPS on the benchmark! It really looks choppy too! I'm talking P4 3.2 GHz, 1.5GB DDR, R9700 here. I guess with the nature of the game (non FPS) people can tolerate this. Heck, look at Falcon 4! There is no way a FPS game can be played (on an enjoyable level anyway) with constant framerates in the 40's.

I remember when Quake (1) first came out and installing that on an AMD 486 DX4-120 that ran Doom perfect. It was practically a slideshow on that machine! I guess time will tell...

Cheers!

I'll admit that 800x600 on the Radeon 9700 would be great because:
4x and 6x AA doesn't have that high of a hit, 8x and 16x AF don't have much hit

800x600 would look just fine with 6x AA and 16X AF. 😉

Not that I care about Doom3, really.

You'll need a fast laptop with the ATI 9000 Mobiity Radeon to run Doom III "smoothly".

From Anand's review:
try another thing Carmack said on for size:

"You know, on our current work at Id right now we're still pushing really hard to make Doom run well on various high end desk top cards. So it's pretty startling to be able to fire it up on a laptop and see it run at a really pretty startling good pace."

That's right. Carmack stated that Doom 3 will be able to run smoothly on a mobile platform powered by a Mobility Radeon 9000.

😛

😀

I dont think someone would design a game that cant be run on 99 percent of consumers machines. Remember a game can be playable at 30 frames.
