Software? Hardware? Both? What kind? How good is it? Would you recommend it?

I'll start off.

Software based firewall, none. I am considering ZoneAlarm.

Hardware based firewall, 2Wire Homeportal 100.

My Homeportal passes the GRC tests with flying colors (I'm not saying I can't be hacked though). It's been a very realiable unit for the past year.

I wouldn't recommend it, however. It seems the company (2Wire) is slowly going out of business.

NAT firewall on D-Link DI-604 and Tiny Personal Firewall. Haven't been hacked (yet). Tiny freezes my system for a few seconds on startup but it works well.

The way things are going, I think you'll see more and more hardware firewalls being used. Viruses are getting better and better at knocking out software based firewalls. Bugbear is the latest to do so.

I AM using norton security on my pc but will soon add a smoothwall hardware-firewall box (FREE BABY!!!)

At the moment I have "technically" one subnet.

Dsl goes to my 4-port router and two of those go to me and my room-ates pcs. Th other rooms in our apartment house 3 other friends of mine. THey are all on a hub coming out of the 3rd router port. The forth will be a DMZ server for games or crap...

With all this I will need a NETWORK firewall so Smoothwall or something simple on a 486 is the ideal option.

Yeah, I am also using the one that came with XP. Anyone got any suggestions on better firewalls that are cheap or free? :D

The DirectvDSL modem is a NAT in itself but I also have a Linksys hooked up as well.

iptables

I really haven't set up any intrusion prevention rules on it yet, just basic IPMASQ stuff. I probably should sometime.

Also, I have it set to reject pings and restrict SYN packets. That will prevent my server from being used for DoS attacks, and should help it withstand being DoS'd directly.

Linksys router for NAT + Norton Personal Firewall. Doesn't interfere with gaming/downloading and keeps the crap out.

Firewall that my DI-614+ has & ZoneAlarm 3.0. I don't need to use ZA, but with the way things are, little extra security is a good thing.

Netgear FR314 - Hardware router/firewall. Cable modem internet connection.

You should see the log files it has on it. The number of sub7 and other attacks it blocks, whoa.
