I am hoping to become more organized this year and need advice on fire resistant safes or data boxes. I would like to keep important documents like mortgage paperwork/school loan docs and etc in there. I also would like to get some sort of document scanner so I can have an electronic copy of the documents if every needed. TIA

DNS-321 with 2x2TB harddrives. It's not the fastest device out there, but it gets the job done. About once a month, I try to copy important files to an external harddrive that I leave at work. I also use Jungle Disk for the most important files.

If you're just saving important documents something like Dropbox or even saving the files to a gmail account might work.

Nothing. I'm not worried about a fire. The hassle of having fire proof shit/backing up/protectingblahblah is more of a hassle than actually having to recover the burnt documents.

I have this safe by Sentry

I'm happy with its performance so-far, but as my house has not yet burned down - I cannot give a personal opinion as to it's fire protection.

I've got a large fire safe rated at an hour, which also stores my firearms.

If its documents, the best - and safest thing to do is to simply get a security box at a bank. Keeping original documents at home is good as far as a cost effective method, but keeping them off site is much safer.

Electronic stuff in two different places, one at my house and one at my brothers home. Paper stuff in fire rated box located at first floor as close to ground as possible , fire burns up so try to keep it close to homes floor. .

If it can't be digital, I have 4 fire king filing cabinets (for the office). 2 2-drawer legal sized $500, used. 1 4-drawer, bend the F over, $1700 new, but I was out of space and had to have it. And FTW, 1 4-drawer used, $50 from Good Will.

+1 for Boomer and the safe deposit box. I have a small sentry box at the house but not real sure I'd trust it in a worst case.

I use a plastic folder to hold all of my important documents.
If there is a fire, the plastic will melt, engulfing the documents and keeping them safe.
