My fan is so noisy, I had to turn it on yesterday when I was watching a movie because I didn't want to turn the volume on the TV too high.

I'm gonna change (I read all the previous posts about the dangers and all...), but is it a normal 12 volts fan in there?

Hi,

normally a 12volt fan is installed in a PSU. Most of the PSU use a 80mm fan. If you like to silence your PSU you can exchange it i.e. with a Verax fan (it´s a very, very good german product). For 300w PSUs it´s absolutely enough and it´s really quiet. I had a Papst fan and I have changed it to this Verax and it´s really more quiet! These fans have a special form of the blades and so there´re less turbulances and less noise. The fans are all thermo-controlled - that´s another reason why they´re so quiet.

I don´t know how to include pictures so I give you the link to the product I use with my PSU:

yeah, you can just use any regular case fan. be sure to take some measurements first. 80mm is standard....but some PS's use different sizes. like my Enermax uses an 80mm for exhaust and 92mm for intake. i replaced both of them w/ panaflo's and it's silent.

do you know of any canadian store that would carry those fans, or any other fan?

I checked on NCIX but I didn't find 80mm fans that weren't coming with a 3 or 4 pins connector

Actually, some of the older PSUs use fans that ran on less than 12Vs. Once I tried on of the fans out by plugging it in to the 12V line, and sparks started shooting out of the fan. And there was this funky smell that I know wasn't good for me. So yeah, be careful about old PSUs (not that old, mine was 5 years old).
